JOHN SYKES: TEESSIDE'S MOST DANGEROUS PAEDOPHILE FACES LIFE SENTENCE IN MIDDLESBROUGH

In a long-awaited culmination of justice, John Sykes, a notorious and highly dangerous sex offender from Middlesbrough and Teeside, has been convicted of multiple heinous crimes committed against young boys over several decades. The proceedings, held at Teesside Crown Court, revealed the extent of Sykes' depravity, which has left a trail of trauma and devastation among his victims and their families.

John William Sykes, now aged 53, has been described by authorities and court officials as a predatory individual who claimed to have abused as many as 80 young boys throughout his lifetime. His criminal history is extensive, with previous sentences including an indefinite imprisonment for public protection, which is effectively a life sentence, for child sex offences. Despite his prior incarcerations, Sykes continued to pose a significant threat to the community, especially to vulnerable children.

Initially, Sykes was scheduled to stand trial in June at Teesside Crown Court, where he faced multiple charges of sexual offences against a young boy from Middlesbrough. However, at the last moment, he entered a guilty plea to seven counts of indecent assault and two additional serious sexual offences, thereby avoiding a lengthy trial. This plea was part of a plea deal that also included admissions to other crimes, including an attack on another young victim. Prosecutor Dan Cordey detailed that Sykes’ crimes first came to light in the 1990s when a boy was discovered unconscious with severe head injuries. During this attack, Sykes had attempted to silence the victim, who had spoken out about the abuse, by inflicting grievous bodily harm.

It was revealed that Sykes had previously been imprisoned for assaulting the same victim, but charges related to his sexual offences were not pursued at that time due to limitations in DNA evidence. The victim, in a heartfelt statement read aloud in court, expressed the profound impact of Sykes’ actions, stating, “This has totally ruined my life. My childhood was stolen from me. There are nights when I’m afraid to go to sleep. I can’t trust anyone.” The statement also highlighted how the trauma had strained his family relationships and caused him immense emotional suffering.

Judge Tony Briggs sentenced Sykes to an additional 10 years in prison, to be served consecutively with his existing sentences. Given that Sykes is already serving an indefinite sentence with a minimum of 42 months, the judge emphasized that his release is highly unlikely, effectively meaning he will spend the rest of his life behind bars. Addressing Sykes via a video link from HMP Holme House, the judge remarked, “You are highly dangerous. It should be understood by the public that, in effect, the sentence is one of life imprisonment.”

Sykes’ criminal history is extensive. In 2010, he was jailed in Leeds for sexual activity with a child and for breaching a sexual offences prevention order, receiving an indefinite sentence with a minimum of 42 months. Later, in May 2014, he was sentenced to six years and nine months for indecent assaults on another boy in the 1990s. During that hearing, Sykes displayed a disturbing smile as details of his crimes were recounted, and claims emerged that he had abused up to 80 boys in total.

Further details of his crimes include an attack on an 8-year-old boy, who was found unconscious with a fractured skull and brain swelling. The victim later disclosed that Sykes had sexually assaulted him and had attempted to kill him to prevent him from revealing the abuse. Sykes admitted to grievous bodily harm but denied attempted murder, receiving a four-year sentence in 1995. His pattern of offending continued, with multiple convictions and admissions over the years, including a series of attacks in Middlesbrough and Teeside.

During the latest court proceedings, the father of one of Sykes’ victims expressed his fury, standing in the courtroom and shouting, “Rot in hell you little rat,” as Sykes was led away. The court also heard how Sykes targeted boys by offering to babysit, which often resulted in them staying overnight at his home. One particularly harrowing case involved an 8-year-old boy who was left unconscious after Sykes’ assault, with the child later revealing the abuse when he regained consciousness. Sykes had taken the boy from his home and tried to kill him to silence him, a crime for which he was convicted and sentenced to 81 months in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges of indecent assault and other offences.

Authorities continue to urge anyone who may have been victimized by Sykes to come forward. Detective Sergeant Dave Smith emphasized the importance of reporting such crimes, encouraging victims or witnesses to contact the police on the 101 number. The case underscores the ongoing threat posed by Sykes, whose history of grooming, violence, and sexual predation has left a lasting scar on the community of Middlesbrough and the wider Teeside area.
