JOHN STUBBINS GATESHEAD PRIMARY SCHOOL HEAD TEACHER JAILED OVER GIRL'S IMAGES IN DURHAM
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the local community, John Stubbins, a former primary school head teacher from Gateshead, was sentenced to prison for his involvement in the sexual exploitation of a teenage girl in Durham. The disturbing details emerged during a court hearing where the court heard how Stubbins, aged 44 at the time, engaged in a series of inappropriate exchanges with the girl, who was only 16 years old.
According to court reports, the girl’s mother addressed Durham Crown Court, revealing the profound impact the incident has had on her daughter’s life.
She explained that her daughter, once an academically gifted student with top grades and a bright future, has seen her aspirations for attending a prestigious university shattered due to the trauma inflicted by Stubbins.
The mother described her daughter as a very private, naive, and studious young girl before her interactions with the defendant, emphasizing her innocence and vulnerability.
The court was informed that Stubbins, who was serving as a head teacher at a County Durham primary school at the time of the offenses, developed what was described as a “self-destructive infatuation” with the girl.
The relationship between the two involved the exchange of thousands of messages, some of which contained explicit content.
Prosecutor Shaun Dodds highlighted the severity of the abuse, noting that the defendant had shared and possessed indecent images of the girl, including 16 images classified as category C, and had also admitted to possessing a category B indecent image.
Stubbins’s actions came to light in March 2017 when he was arrested following an investigation into his communications with the girl.
The court heard that after his arrest, he was suspended from his position at the school.
The case further revealed that the offenses took place between February and March 2017, during which time Stubbins was aware that his conduct was highly inappropriate and potentially career-ending.
During the proceedings, Stubbins pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual exploitation, as well as possession of indecent images.
He did not, however, enter a plea regarding a more serious charge involving a category B image.
The court was told that the defendant was a father of two and resided on St Cuthbert’s Road in Gateshead.
Throughout the hearing, he was supported by family members, while the victim’s family sat on the opposite side of the courtroom.
Judge Jonathan Carroll sentenced Stubbins to two years and two months in prison.
Additionally, he ordered that Stubbins register as a sex offender for the next ten years.
The judge emphasized the importance of trust in the teaching profession, stating, “Young people are the future of the nation.
Society depends on teachers, and society needs the best of us to come forward as educators.
It is a privilege to hold that trust, and you abused it in a way that would truly offend and shock any right-thinking person.” The court also noted that the defendant was aware that his actions, which occurred over a two-month period, could have ended his career and caused lasting harm to the victim.
Stubbins is scheduled to appear again at Durham Crown Court on May 5 for sentencing, where further legal proceedings will determine the full extent of his punishment.
