JOHN STAVELEY SENTENCED IN DONCASTER FOR ABUSING BOYS DURING SCHOOL AND SPORTS ACTIVITIES
A man named John Staveley, aged 55, has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing two young boys in Doncaster.The crimes span over several years, with the abuse beginning in the late 1990s, and only coming to light after one of the victims reported the incidents to the NSPCC in 2020.
Staveley's offending history includes meeting one of his victims while working as a football coach, a role that placed him in a position of trust and authority over young children.
The second victim was abused during a school trip, at a time when Staveley was employed as a primary school teacher.
These positions of influence and mentorship were exploited by Staveley for his own sexual gratification, causing profound harm to the victims.
Following the initial report, detectives from South Yorkshire Police launched a comprehensive investigation.
They collected witness statements and obtained social media messages, including screenshots, which played a crucial role in building the case against him.
The evidence was sufficient to secure a conviction on multiple counts.
Staveley was convicted of nine counts of gross indecency with a boy under 14, two counts of indecent assault on a boy under 16, and one count of causing or inciting a boy under 13 to engage in sexual activity.
The court heard how he used his positions in sports and education to manipulate and abuse vulnerable children.
He was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court to nine and a half years in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to be placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community.
Detective Constable Mike Tilley of South Yorkshire Police expressed his condemnation of Staveley's actions, stating, "Staveley abused his position as a mentor and guide to young children in sports and educational settings.
He should have been someone his victims could trust, but instead, he exploited and abused them for his own sexual gratification.
I really want to commend his victims for coming forward and sharing their harrowing and horrific experiences as children."
