JOHN SHARP FROM GATESHEAD CAUGHT WITH OVER 2000 CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

In October 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving John Sharp, a married grandfather residing in Gateshead, who was found to possess an alarming collection of indecent images of children.

The investigation revealed that Sharp had accumulated more than 2,000 such images, which were discovered on ten different electronic devices seized from his home during a police raid.

Sharp, a maintenance worker by profession, had obtained these illicit images through peer-to-peer file sharing software.

It was also uncovered that he had taken measures to encrypt some of the files, indicating a level of technical knowledge and an attempt to conceal his activities.

The images depicted children as young as one year old, with the collection including a total of 2,344 images categorized into different severity levels: 60 in the most serious Category A, 39 in Category B, and 1,897 in Category C.

Additionally, five movies featuring similar content were found among the files.

According to reports, the images ranged in age from infants to 16-year-olds, highlighting the disturbing nature of the material.

The police executed a search warrant at Sharp’s residence in September of the previous year, leading to the seizure of 15 electronic devices.

Of these, ten were thoroughly examined and confirmed to contain indecent images of children.

During police interviews, Sharp denied any responsibility for possessing or viewing the images.

He claimed that he had purchased the computer equipment from car boot sales and was unaware of how the illicit material had come to be stored on his devices.

Despite his denials, the evidence pointed to a prolonged period during which he had actively sought out and viewed such material.

At Newcastle Crown Court, Recorder Jo Kidd addressed Sharp’s case, emphasizing the seriousness of his actions.

She noted that Sharp’s interest in viewing sexual assaults on children spanned a significant period and that he had demonstrated sufficient technical ability to encrypt files containing indecent images.

The court also highlighted that during a probation interview, Sharp appeared indifferent to the consequences of his actions and showed limited understanding of the harm inflicted on victims.

Judge Kidd stated, “Your interest in viewing sexual assaults on children covered a significant period of time.

There were key word searches on your devices and it’s also clear you had sufficient technical wherewithal to encrypt files which contained indecent images.

You were asked during your probation interview to talk about the circumstances in which you came to have those images and you are described in that report as being blase as to the consequences and you have a limited understanding of the impact on the victims that this sort of offending causes.

It’s clear you have a long way to go to get to the point where you acknowledge you have a sexual interest and are sexually gratified by looking at children being sexually assaulted.” Sharp, of Aycliffe Crescent in Gateshead, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children.

His sentence was a 12-month prison term, suspended for two years, along with a requirement to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.

Additionally, he was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for seven years and was placed under a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration.

This case underscores the ongoing concerns regarding the possession and distribution of child abuse images and highlights the importance of rigorous law enforcement efforts to combat such offenses.
