SON JAILED FOR LIFE AFTER FATHER’S BRUTAL STREET MURDER IN SOUTHPORT
This is the disturbing account of John Sarawanskyj, who brutally murdered his 73-year-old father, Ivan Sarawanskyj, on December 22 last year on Braemar Avenue in Southport.CCTV footage captured John jokingly saying, "That's my Christmas present off my dad.
He doesn't know yet.
He will do when I get home.
He's gonna kill me.
Look what I've just got for my Christmas present," just moments before the attack.
On the day of the murder, John visited VK Saba Wines six times, including at 7.45 am where he told the shopkeeper, "I've been up all night me," before later withdrawing £200 from his father's account.
After the assault, CCTV footage recorded John shouting in the street, "He's dead.
He's dead.
He's dead," and dismissing the murder by telling a friend, "I'm not bothered he's dead.
He wasn't a nice man." He also withdrew £200 using his father's bank card and expressed no remorse for his actions.
Neighbors reported hearing frequent shouting between the father and son, and information suggests a strained relationship influenced by past cruelty during John's childhood.
During trial, it was revealed that John lied repeatedly to police about his whereabouts after the incident, initially denying being at the property and later claiming self-defense.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 15 years after being convicted of his father's murder.
The court noted the overwhelming evidence against him, including injuries indicating prolonged suffering of the victim, who was described as frail, small, and vulnerable.
Detective Chief Inspector Alan Nuttall condemned the crime, emphasizing its brutality and the devastating impact of domestic abuse.
The case highlights the various forms domestic abuse can take and its potential fatal consequences, especially when involving vulnerable individuals like Ivan Sarawanskyj.
