PAEDOPHILE TOLD POLICE WHERE TO FIND HIS STASH OF 100,000 INDECENT IMAGES
A registered sex offender with more than 100,000 indecent images has narrowly escaped jail after he directed police to his illegal collection.Carl Mitchell, aged 59, stored over 11,000 images classified as Category A—the most severe type—on a computer at his residence in Merseyside.
At Liverpool Crown Court yesterday, Monday, it was revealed that Merseyside Police obtained a search warrant for Mitchell’s home on Shakespeare Street in Southport on September 30 of the previous year.
The search resulted in the seizure of multiple electronic devices, and Mitchell was subsequently detained and questioned.
During his interview, prosecutor Paul Blasbery explained, Mitchell denied viewing or sharing any indecent images of children but did mention a computer tower that had not been confiscated during the initial search.
This prompted a secondary search, which uncovered the computer and three external hard drives.
Examination of these devices revealed a total of 11,046 Category A images—those depicting the most serious abuse— including 358 videos and disturbing footage of a baby, estimated to be six to twelve months old, being sexually assaulted, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Additional files included 10,483 images classified as Category B and 95,248 as Category C, along with 24 images of extreme pornography.
Mitchell has a criminal history with 15 convictions spanning 28 offences, including cases of indecent assault in 1986 and 1988; however, he has been without any convictions since 2002.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Brian Cummings KC highlighted four aggravating factors.
He stressed the sheer volume of highly obscene material—over 11,000 items—with 358 videos in Category A involving penetrative acts.
The youngest victim identified was a baby, underscoring the gravity of the case.
The judge emphasized that Mitchell’s offenses were compounded by the extensive Category B and C content, which included over 95,000 items and more than 500 videos.
Furthermore, Mitchell’s previous convictions for indecent assault, almost four decades ago, were noted, but the probation officer’s pre-sentence report indicated a concerning pattern of entrenched, distorted thinking about children.
The judge acknowledged Mitchell’s lack of recent convictions since 2002, which he considered alongside the report’s mitigation, including mental health issues.
Despite Mitchell’s apparent honesty in acknowledging his offending, which was deemed unusual and considered a mitigating factor, the judge remarked that true remorse was uncertain.
Nonetheless, his frankness in recognising his sexual interest in children was seen as a potentially positive sign for rehabilitation.
Mitchell also suffers from health problems and expressed awareness of his attraction to children and a desire to address it.
He pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing indecent images of children and extreme pornography, with a previous charge of distributing such images being dropped.
Dressed in a black biker jacket, with long grey hair and a beard, he was sentenced to 16 months in prison, suspended over two years.
The court also imposed up to 20 days of rehabilitative activities, a programme requirement, and a 12-month mental health treatment order.
Additionally, Mitchell must register as a sex offender for the next ten years and was issued a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.
