JOHN PSAILA, THE BOLTON DOG-FIGHTING KINGPIN, SENTENCED AFTER HORRIFIC CRUELTY REVEALED IN WIGAN AND MANCHESTER

In a significant crackdown on organized animal cruelty, John Psaila, a notorious figure linked to some of the most severe dog-fighting gangs across the United Kingdom, has been brought to justice. Psaila, born on February 12, 1965, and residing at Alan Ball House, Bolton Road, Farnworth, Bolton BL4 7AT, was identified as a central player in the illegal dog-fighting scene, with authorities uncovering disturbing evidence of his involvement in this brutal activity.

Investigations into Psaila’s activities led to a series of raids in June 2014, conducted by the RSPCA’s special operations unit, which specializes in tackling organized animal crimes. The officers, working alongside Greater Manchester Police, executed warrants at Psaila’s residence in Abram, Wigan, as well as at a property on Lowton Street in Radcliffe, Manchester. These searches revealed a shocking array of dog-fighting paraphernalia and medical supplies intended for treating injuries sustained during fights.

At Psaila’s home in Abram, authorities discovered what appeared to be a makeshift training facility for pit bull terrier-type dogs. The scene was disturbing, featuring treadmills used for training, weighing scales, veterinary kits with medications, muscle-gaining powders, and breaking sticks—tools typically employed to separate fighting dogs during violent encounters. Evidence suggested that Psaila was actively involved in training dogs for combat, with footage recovered from his mobile phone showing dogs being conditioned on treadmills.

Further investigation uncovered that Psaila was the owner of two pit bull-type dogs named Ziggy and Tip. He admitted to training both animals for fighting purposes. Additionally, he confessed to training a dog called Cruise, although this dog was not present at either of the properties during the raids. Text messages retrieved from Psaila’s phone indicated plans to arrange a fight between Cruise and an unidentified dog, highlighting the extent of his involvement in illegal dog-fighting activities.

Authorities also found a variety of related materials, including dog-fighting magazines, yearbooks, and a blood-stained bucket and sponge, which underscored the brutal nature of Psaila’s operations. The discovery of these items, along with the training equipment, painted a clear picture of a well-organized and systematic dog-fighting enterprise.

Psaila’s disturbing connection to the cruelty was further emphasized by his personal tattoos, notably a large pit bull tattooed across his back. During his court appearance, he displayed a lack of remorse, winking at his daughter as he was sentenced. The magistrates sentenced him to 121 days in jail and imposed a lifetime ban on keeping animals, citing the danger posed by the pit bulls involved in his activities. Furthermore, two of the pit bull-type dogs were ordered to be destroyed due to their perceived dangerousness.

This case highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement and animal welfare organizations to combat organized dog-fighting and animal cruelty, sending a strong message that such activities will be met with severe legal consequences.
