JOHN MURPHY, BOLTON PRIEST, JAILED FOR DECADES OF CHILD ABUSE IN BOLTON AND NEIGHBORING AREAS

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Bolton and surrounding regions, 96-year-old former priest John Murphy has been sentenced to prison for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against young boys over three decades ago.

The allegations, which span a period of approximately 27 years, came to light after Murphy’s previous conviction in 2017 for molesting other boys, prompting many victims to come forward and reveal the extent of his predatory behavior.

All but one of the victims, who ranged in age from just eight to sixteen at the time of the abuse, were children under his care during various activities, including swimming lessons and visits to their homes.

Murphy, who was ordained as a priest in 1962 and served in multiple parishes across Merseyside, Lancashire, and Greater Manchester before his retirement, exploited his trusted position within the Catholic community to groom and sexually abuse these boys.

The court heard harrowing details of how Murphy used his authority and access to vulnerable children to carry out these acts.

Some victims felt unable to speak out initially, fearing the devastating impact it would have on their families.

One victim, overwhelmed with emotion during his impact statement, expressed deep-seated anger towards his parents, claiming that their unwavering devotion to their faith blinded them to the reality of Murphy’s evil actions.

He described how Murphy’s abuse left him with lasting scars, including nightmares, loss of faith, and feelings of shame.

Frail and white-haired, Murphy sat in the dock wearing a face mask, with his head bowed throughout the lengthy hearing that lasted approximately an hour and a half.

He pleaded guilty to 32 counts of indecent assault and indecency, acknowledging his guilt in the court.

Judge Anil Murray, who had previously sentenced Murphy to three years in prison in December 2017 for earlier offenses, handed down a new sentence of five years for these additional crimes.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Murray emphasized the devastating and long-lasting impact Murphy’s actions had on his victims.

He highlighted how the abuse led to a loss of confidence, nightmares, shattered faith in the church, and profound shame.

The judge condemned Murphy for abusing his position of trust as a priest, noting that his role in society was exploited to commit these heinous acts and to conceal them from the public.

Murphy’s claims in his pre-sentence report that he could not remember the offenses or that he had no attraction to males were dismissed by the court.

Judge Murray pointed out that there was no neurological impairment to explain Murphy’s alleged amnesia and expressed skepticism about his remorse, describing it as insincere.

The judge remarked that Murphy had been living a lie, using his good character and societal standing to hide his true nature and continue his abuse for many years.

In addition to his prison sentence, Murphy, who also served in the Army and RAF, was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life and was given an extended license for 12 months.

The case gained further attention when one of the victims from the earlier case appeared on television after Murphy’s initial imprisonment.

This broadcast prompted other victims to come forward, including a sixth victim who had struggled with the effects of the abuse throughout his life and decided to speak to the police.

The abuse took place in various locations across Bolton, Liverpool, Leigh, Whiston, and Ashton-in-Makerfield.

Victims recounted being horrified when Murphy unexpectedly appeared at their family’s funeral mass, which caused one to avoid visiting his mother’s grave for ten years.

The incidents involved Murphy taking boys to swimming baths, camping trips, and visiting their homes, where the abuse continued in private settings.

The community and authorities hope that this conviction will bring some measure of justice and closure to those affected by Murphy’s predatory actions.
