JOHN MILLER BRADFORD SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS IN JAIL
In December 1998, Bradford witnessed a disturbing case involving John Miller, a man who was convicted of multiple sexual offenses against young girls.Miller, aged 57 at the time, had confessed his sins after committing these heinous acts, which spanned from 1994 to 1998.
His guilty plea covered a total of eight separate sex offenses, leading to a significant legal judgment and a mandatory registration as a sex offender.
The case came to public attention when one of the victims, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, confided in her mother about the abuse she had endured.
This revelation prompted an investigation that uncovered Miller’s disturbing pattern of behavior.
Miller, who had been a practicing Jehovah’s Witness for approximately ten years, initially made a confession to the elders at the Bradford Kingdom Hall Church.
Following this internal disclosure, he cooperated with law enforcement authorities and was subsequently charged and convicted.
During the court proceedings at Bradford Crown Court, Recorder Jonathan Durham-Hall QC described Miller’s conduct as “utterly despicable” and ordered him to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years.
The prosecution, led by Richard Mansell, detailed how Miller had indecently assaulted one girl on two separate occasions while visiting her family during his ministry work.
Additionally, between 1994 and 1996, Miller committed acts of indecency on another girl.
The offenses extended further when, in 1997 or 1998, Miller traveled to Bridlington to assist with the construction of a new Kingdom Hall church.
During this period, he carried out another indecent assault on a different girl, which included four separate acts of indecency.
Miller, who was formerly residing on Thorpe Avenue, Thornton, Bradford, admitted to five charges of indecency and three charges of indecent assault.
His defense attorney, Colin Harvey, provided context by describing Miller’s transformation from a man known for heavy drinking, fighting, smoking, and gambling to someone who became “meek, mild, and intelligent” after joining the Jehovah’s Witness community.
Harvey explained that Miller’s wife’s health issues contributed to his increasing sexual isolation, which may have influenced his behavior.
Despite his remorse and religious affiliation, the court emphasized the severity of his crimes.
The judge, Recorder Durham-Hall, made it clear that Miller’s actions were profoundly unacceptable, and he was ordered to be placed on the sex offenders’ register for ten years.
The case drew criticism from local MP Terry Rooney, who campaigns for harsher penalties for child sex offenders.
Rooney expressed outrage over the leniency of the sentence, stating, “These girls will be traumatised for the rest of their lives and this man gets three years in jail and is then free to do it again.” Rooney further criticized the justice system, asserting that individuals like Miller should be removed from society for life, citing the high re-offending rates among sex offenders.
He also mentioned that he had been actively lobbying the Home Secretary for tougher measures, emphasizing the need for longer sentences to protect vulnerable children and prevent future abuse.
