JOHN MCDONALD OF MIDDLESBROUGH JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AND INTERNET OFFENSES
In March 2019, a disturbing case emerged involving John McDonald, a man from Middlesbrough, who was convicted of heinous crimes and serious breaches of court orders related to child exploitation and internet offenses. The case highlights the ongoing dangers posed by individuals with such disturbing tendencies, especially when they fail to adhere to legal restrictions designed to protect the public.
John McDonald, aged 41, was branded a 'dangerous man' by the court after it was revealed that he harbored twisted fantasies involving abduction, sexual assault, and strangulation of children.
Court proceedings disclosed that McDonald had been actively searching the internet for indecent images of children, which further underscored the severity of his offending.
His actions and thoughts were so concerning that he voluntarily reported his disturbing fantasies to authorities, confessing, 'I can't stop.' Despite his admission and the serious nature of his thoughts, it was noted by his barrister, Stephen Constantine, that little work had been undertaken to address his issues.
McDonald had previously served time in prison after being convicted in November 2015 for molesting a very young schoolboy and attempting to solicit sexual acts from the child.
His convictions included sexually assaulting a child under 13, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and possessing over 600 indecent and prohibited images of children, along with extreme pornographic material.
Although he had volunteered at a local playgroup in Middlesbrough, authorities confirmed that his crimes were not connected to his work there.
McDonald was released from prison in December 2016 but was quickly recalled after making a concerning confession to probation officers.
Prosecutor Harry Hadfield revealed that McDonald disclosed fantasizing about kidnapping a five-year-old child from the street, taking the child to a derelict house, and raping them.
He also described a disturbing fantasy involving a derelict train track, where he imagined abducting a child from an Asda store in South Bank, Middlesbrough, with intentions of raping and strangling the child to death.
He remained in custody until his sentence concluded in June 2018.
Following his release, McDonald expressed a misplaced sense of trust in himself, particularly regarding a tablet computer he had received as a gift.
However, during an unannounced inspection by a detective on November 15 of the previous year, McDonald became visibly flustered when asked to show his device.
He admitted to watching pornography and expressed concern that his mother might discover his activities.
The detective found numerous websites related to incest and searches indicating a sexual attraction to children, with over 2,000 pages in his browsing history.
Overcome with emotion, McDonald broke down in tears, stating, 'I can't help myself.
I can't stop.
I need help.' He pleaded with the officer to delete his internet history, promising he would not repeat his actions.
He also confessed that he engaged in sexual gratification through these searches, pleasuring himself five to ten times daily.
Despite a court order known as a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which prohibited him from deleting his internet history, McDonald had deliberately removed many cookies from his device, leading to his arrest and court appearance again.
McDonald, residing on Warwick Street, Ayresome, Middlesbrough, admitted to breaching the indefinite SHPO.
During sentencing, Judge Simon Bourne-Arton QC, the Recorder of Middlesbrough, highlighted that McDonald had reported his own 'violent thoughts towards young children.' The judge emphasized that McDonald had accessed pornography extensively, including material involving children, and possessed deviant and perverted views about minors.
Describing the breach as very serious, the judge concluded that McDonald was indeed a dangerous individual and sentenced him to three more years in prison, reinforcing the gravity of his actions and the ongoing threat he poses to society.
