JOHN HARTLEY FROM MIDDLESBROUGH CAUGHT IN SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING GROOMING AND VOYEURISM
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through Middlesbrough and beyond, John Hartley, a once-respected figure in the world of snooker and billiards, has been convicted of a series of heinous child sex offences.The 42-year-old, who hails from Windsor Road, Eston, was found guilty of multiple charges related to the grooming and exploitation of young boys over a period of several years.
Hartley's criminal activities came to light after one of his victims, who initially believed he had been groomed, only realized the extent of the abuse after watching a storyline on the popular television series Hollyoaks.
The storyline depicted a football coach engaging in similar abusive behaviour, which prompted the victim to reflect on his own experiences with Hartley.
During the court proceedings at Teesside Crown Court, it was revealed that Hartley, a former director of the English Association of Snooker and Billiards and a competitor representing England in the 2003 World Billiards Championship in India, used his professional status to manipulate and groom young boys he met through his coaching activities.
Prosecutor Shaun Dodds detailed how Hartley targeted teenagers, often taking them on trips across the country for tournaments, where he exploited opportunities to carry out his sinister plans.
Hartley's grooming involved a pattern of sexualised behaviour over approximately two years, with incidents occurring on around 20 to 30 occasions.
The court heard that he would share hotel rooms with his victims, sleeping naked and exposing himself freely.
He also provided alcohol and poppers at his flat in Saltburn, further facilitating his abuse.
One victim recounted how he and two other boys had stayed at Hartley's flat before a trip to Alton Towers, during which Hartley slept naked in bed with them.
Additional accounts described incidents in gym shower rooms in Redcar, where Hartley carried out sexual acts after tennis matches, and at his Saltburn flat, where he shared a bed with a young boy while showing him pornography.
The victim explained that Hartley encouraged him to participate in sexual acts, which he found embarrassing but was coerced into doing.
Hartley's behaviour was characterized by a pattern of manipulation, with the victim noting that Hartley enjoyed the acts and pressured him to join in.
Further disturbing revelations involved Hartley's use of hidden cameras in his home, including one disguised as an air freshener, to secretly record his victims.
One such recording captured a naked boy in the shower, unaware that he was being filmed.
The court also heard that Hartley had taken a naked photograph of a victim in the shower at his Hartlepool residence.
The footage and images were stored on a Sony camcorder seized by police during an arrest at Hartley's address.
Hartley's arrest was carried out by Cleveland Police, who found the concealed cameras and seized the device.
In interviews, Hartley claimed that the cameras were for security purposes, citing his frequent absences from home, and suggested that the cleaner might have moved the camera into the bathroom.
He admitted to watching pornography with a child but insisted it was not for sexual gratification, claiming he found it amusing.
However, he acknowledged that such behaviour was inappropriate.
He also admitted to possessing and allowing young boys to use poppers, a recreational drug, at his flat.
The court heard evidence of Hartley's involvement in causing children to watch sexual acts and inciting them to engage in sexual activities, all for his own gratification.
He was also found guilty of voyeurism, having recorded a person in a private act without their consent.
In sentencing, the judge imposed a custodial term of four and a half years on Hartley.
Additionally, he was ordered to comply with lifelong notification requirements and a sexual harm prevention order, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
The case has highlighted the dangers of grooming and exploitation, even by individuals who may appear to be respectable figures in their communities.
