JOHN DENT BRADFORD WAR VETERAN SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF GIRLS IN BRADFORD
In a case that has shocked the community of Bradford, John Dent, a former Falklands War veteran, has been sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of multiple serious sexual offenses involving young girls. The Bradford Crown Court heard harrowing details of Dent’s crimes, which took place over a span of three years, from 2002 to 2005.
According to court records, Dent targeted four girls, all aged between 12 and 16 at the time of the assaults.
The victims recounted how Dent would often walk around his home either completely naked or with only a towel wrapped around his waist.
He falsely claimed to some of the girls that he was a naturist and that he possessed expertise in massage therapy, using these claims as a means to gain their trust and manipulate them.
John Dent, aged 46 and formerly residing on Clare Road in Wyke, Bradford, was convicted by a jury in May on multiple counts.
His convictions included six charges of sexual assault, six counts of possessing indecent images of young girls, one charge of indecent assault, and one count of committing an act of gross indecency with a child.
The court heard how Dent’s actions were part of a pattern of grooming behavior, disguised under the pretense of naturism and massage, which he exploited to prey on vulnerable young girls.
During the sentencing, Judge Robert Bartfield emphasized the severity of Dent’s misconduct.
He stated that Dent had effectively groomed the girls for abuse under false pretenses, exploiting their trust and innocence.
The judge acknowledged Dent’s previous good character and his service as a Falklands War veteran, noting, “I bear in mind your previous good character and the fact that you are a Falklands veteran who has given distinguished service to your country.” However, he made it clear that Dent’s actions were not isolated lapses but part of a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.
Further details revealed that Dent had downloaded a total of 251 indecent images onto his home computer and laptop.
These images ranged from low-level (levels 1 and 2) to a single image at the highest level (Level 5), indicating the severity of the material he possessed.
Some of the images had been viewed by the girls as they were downloaded, adding to the trauma they endured.
Judge Bartfield commented on the likely impact of the sentence, saying, “It is likely that the long sentence I am about to pass will restrain you from giving way to these tendencies again.” In mitigation, Stephen Uttley, Dent’s legal representative, highlighted Dent’s service during the Falklands campaign and his good character prior to these offenses.
He also noted the devastating effect the jury’s verdicts had on Dent’s family.
As part of his sentence, Dent was also ordered to be subject to a lifelong Sexual Offences Prevention Order and will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to prevent further harm.
