JOHN DENIAN AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN BRIGHTON
A 65-year-old man from Brighton has been sentenced to three years in prison after being convicted of serious sexual offences and acts of cruelty committed against a young girl. The defendant, John Denian, who works as a handyman and resides on Dewe Road in Brighton, appeared at Brighton Crown Court this past Friday to face sentencing.
The court found Denian guilty on multiple counts, including incitement to gross indecency and indecent assault.
These offences involved a girl who was between the ages of five and ten at the time, spanning from 1980 to 1985.
In addition to these charges, the court also determined that Denian had been cruel towards the same girl over a period of years, specifically from 1980 to 1991.
The sentencing comprised a one-year term for the indecency-related offences, and an additional two-year sentence for the acts of cruelty, with both sentences to be served consecutively.
Furthermore, Denian will be required to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, reflecting the severity of his crimes.
Detective Constable Sarah Townsend, who was involved in the investigation, stated: “Denian took advantage of the vulnerability of this young girl, who he knew, for many years, starting when she was barely five years old.
It was a quite appalling breach of trust and only a year ago did she feel able to come forward and tell us what had happened to her over so many years.” She emphasized the bravery of the victim, highlighting that her willingness to come forward and give evidence was instrumental in securing the conviction.
Townsend concluded by reaffirming the police's commitment: “We admire her bravery in coming forward and being prepared to give evidence.
It shows that we will always take such reports seriously and will investigate wherever possible.” The victim, whose identity remains protected under the Sexual Offences Act, provided a heartfelt statement following Denian’s conviction.
She described her childhood as being filled with fear, distress, and misery.
She explained that the abuse left her feeling uncertain about herself and constantly worried about small details, including what she wore and how she presented herself.
“I spent years feeling petrified of John Denian,” she revealed.
“It has been extremely difficult for me to come forward and speak about this, but I knew it was the right decision.
I also chose to give my evidence in court without screens or a video link because I wanted to face him as an adult, to show him I have control over my life and that I am no longer afraid of him.” Expressing her relief and hope for the future, she added: “I am delighted that he has been convicted, and I can now move forward with the continued support of my friends and partner.” This case underscores the importance of justice for victims of such heinous crimes, and the bravery required for survivors to come forward and seek justice.
