CHILD SEX ABUSER JAILED FOR FOUR YEARS
John Briggs, aged 60 from Houghton-le-Spring near Sunderland, has been sentenced to four years in prison for child sexual abuse. He was found guilty by jurors of eight counts of sexual assault of a child under 13.
The court heard that Briggs had groped and abused a young girl, having a "devastating impact" on her life.
The victim stated that the abuse caused her to self-harm and led to a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
She expressed her belief that she could never reclaim the time stolen from her.
Despite Briggs’s denial of wrongdoing, the jury convicted him.
In her sentencing, Judge Julie Scott emphasized the egregious nature of Briggs's actions, describing the harm inflicted as "devastating" and stating that "she will have to live with what you did to her for the rest of her life." The judge also imposed a sexual harm prevention order and required Briggs to sign the sex offender register for life.
