JOHN BANCROFT SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS IN ESSEX FOR SEXUAL EXPLOITATION OF TEENAGERS
John Bancroft, a 68-year-old man from Essex, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted of multiple serious crimes related to the sexual exploitation of minors. During a seven-week trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court, Bancroft was found guilty of four counts of rape, meeting a child following sexual grooming, paying for the sexual services of a child, attempting, causing or inciting the sexual exploitation of a child, and attempting sexual communication with a child.The court heard that Bancroft used dating apps such as MyLol to target vulnerable girls aged between 13 and 18 during 2016 and 2017. He posed as a younger man and offered 'sugar daddy' arrangements, often telling victims he was much younger than his real age and promising money in exchange for sexual acts. Metropolitan Police described Bancroft as someone fulfilling his 'twisted demands' under the guise of mentorship, teaching, and fatherhood.
During the trial, evidence revealed that Bancroft would send victims up to 100 WhatsApp messages daily when they did not respond. He would sometimes drive them to remote locations for sex, and some victims met him in person as a result of his persistent messaging. In exchange for food, money, or gifts, some girls engaged in acts including group sex and sadomasochistic activities. Bancroft also shared indecent images of the girls on WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
Prior to the trial, Bancroft pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm to a child during sexual activity and multiple counts of taking, possessing, and distributing indecent images of children. During the trial’s second week, he admitted to an additional 15 charges, including paying for sexual services of a child, causing or inciting the sexual exploitation of a child, and attempting sexual communication with a child.
The police described Bancroft and his brother, Graham Manicom, as 'sick and twisted,' emphasizing that they pose a 'serious risk to vulnerable women and children.' Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, the Met’s lead officer for exploitation, expressed satisfaction with the sentence, stating, 'I am glad they will be behind bars for a significant period of time.'
