DRUNK MAN LEFT BOY WITH DEVASTATING INJURIES AND RECEIVED NINE-YEAR SENTENCE

A "very drunk" man assaulted a boy - leaving him with "horrendous injuries" including a fractured skull.

Jevgenij Vorobjovs, 35, of no fixed address, punched him to the head, kicked him to the back and repeatedly struck his chest and abdomen, Nottingham Crown Court was told on Tuesday, October 19.

Vorobjovs grabbed the boy's face in July last year, leaving finger marks, and shook him so hard he had no control over his head which moved forwards and backwards, resulting in a bleed in his spinal cord.

Afterwards, Vorobjovs failed to get help for the boy and it was others who alerted emergency services.

The boy can't be named for legal reasons.

The child was left with multiple bruises, a fractured skull, and a subdural haematoma, which occurs when a blood vessel in the space between the skull and the brain - the subdural space - is damaged.

He had a brain contusion injury and signs of oxygen depravation.

Judge James Sampson imposed a nine-year prison sentence on Vorobjovs for causing grievous bodily harm with intent and an 18-month sentence concurrently for cruelty to a child.

Vorobjovs, who pleaded guilty to both allegations, will serve two-thirds of his sentence before release.

Judge Sampson told him in the dock: "You indulged yourself in drinking." And he had assaulted him in "multiple ways", so badly that the victim was left with marks on his body.

The boy has made a physical recovery.

The medical evidence indicated that the long-term consequences for his brain are not yet known.

He may or may not suffer long-term mental consequences.

"The injuries sound horrendous, because they are horrendous," added Judge Sampson.

David Watts, mitigating, said the incident was "very out of character" for the defendant and he accepted he was drunk that day.

Vorobjovs was hard-working but lost his job in March because of the pandemic.

"He apologises through me for what has happened", said Mr Watts.
