JERMAINE HENDERSON FROM BOLTON SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO FRENCH BULLDOG JADA IN HORWICH

In a disturbing case of animal neglect, Jermaine Henderson, a resident of Bolton, was found guilty of allowing his French bulldog, Jada, to suffer from severe neglect and health issues that ultimately led to her euthanasia.

Henderson, born on September 30, 1994, and residing at 1 Cherry Tree Way, Horwich, Bolton BL6 6JG, became the subject of an investigation after concerns about Jada’s welfare surfaced in August 2022.

According to reports, an RSPCA officer visited Henderson’s home in Cherry Tree Way, Horwich, during that month and was immediately struck by the dog's dire condition.

Jada was found to be dangerously underweight, with her ribs, hips, and spinal bones clearly visible, indicating prolonged malnutrition and neglect.

The dog was also observed dragging her hind limbs, a sign of serious neurological impairment.

The officer noted a strong smell of feces and urine emanating from the premises, further highlighting the neglectful environment in which Jada was kept.

During the inspection, Henderson admitted that Jada had been taken to a veterinary appointment at the Animal Trust on March 4, 2022, after she suddenly lost the use of her back legs.

However, he failed to seek further medical treatment for her over the subsequent five months, despite her worsening condition.

The veterinarian at the Greater Manchester Animal Hospital later diagnosed her with a cervical intervertebral disc prolapse, a serious spinal issue that could have been treated if addressed promptly.

The vet also stated that Henderson declined further investigations due to cost concerns, despite the dog's deteriorating health.

Jessica Pierce, an RSPCA officer, described her visit to Henderson’s flat, stating she was “extremely concerned” for Jada’s welfare.

She observed that the dog was unable to walk properly, with her back legs crossing over and dragging behind her.

When asked if she had been to the vet recently, Henderson claimed she had been to the Animal Trust but could not recall when, and he confirmed she was not currently under veterinary care.

Further examination revealed that Jada was suffering from severe ear infections and inflammation, which had also been left untreated.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that the dog was suffering from spinal cord compression and nerve damage, which contributed to muscle wastage in her hind legs.

The findings indicated that her suffering was prolonged and unnecessary, leading to the decision by veterinary professionals to humanely euthanize her to end her pain.

Henderson was prosecuted by the RSPCA and pleaded guilty to a charge under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

His court appearance took place at Wigan Magistrates’ Court on December 14, 2023.

The court sentenced him to a four-month custodial sentence, which was suspended for 12 months.

Additionally, Henderson was ordered to pay £400 in court costs and a victim surcharge of £154.

He was also disqualified from keeping animals for five years, a ban that will expire in December 2028.

This case highlights the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglecting the health and well-being of pets.

The authorities continue to emphasize the need for responsible pet ownership and timely veterinary care to prevent such tragic outcomes.
