In December 2019, a disturbing case unfolded in Blackpool involving Jeffrey Edgar, a man notorious locally for his resemblance to characters from the TV show Peaky Blinders.Edgar, aged 52 and residing on Onslow Road in Blackpool, was convicted of heinous sexual offenses committed against three young children, including a boy as young as six years old.
The severity of his crimes and the impact on his victims led to a substantial prison sentence, reflecting the gravity of his actions.
Jeffrey Edgar’s trial took place at Preston Crown Court, where the court heard detailed accounts of the abuse.
The proceedings revealed that Edgar had subjected three children to sexual assault over a period of several years.
The victims, whose identities remain protected, bravely provided personal statements during the sentencing hearing, which moved many in the courtroom to tears.
One victim expressed feelings of shame and helplessness, describing how he was overwhelmed by torment and numbness, even contemplating death at times.
Another recounted how his childhood had been 'stolen' from him, with the memories of the abuse serving as a constant distraction in his life.
The third child spoke of the 'daily burden' of keeping the secret, a weight that haunted him daily.
It was also revealed that one of the victims confided in a friend in 2018, which eventually led to the investigation.
The court was informed that Edgar’s criminal history included a previous conviction in 2001 for sexual offenses against a schoolgirl, for which he served four years in prison.
His request for early parole in 2003 was denied due to his inappropriate attitude towards his victims at the time.
Social services later assessed him as 'remorseful,' but the current case painted a different picture.
Judge Heather Lloyd, presiding over the case, delivered a stern verdict.
She condemned Edgar for making the victims’ lives miserable and pointed out that a letter he wrote to one of the victims demonstrated only concern for himself and self-pity, rather than remorse or acknowledgment of his crimes.
The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offenses, noting that Edgar’s abuse spanned over six years, during which he moved from victim to victim, escalating his predatory behavior.
She highlighted that Edgar failed to stop even when one of his victims, a boy aged just 10, was crying, and she criticized his lack of remorse and insight into his actions.
Throughout the trial, Edgar maintained his innocence, denying all allegations.
The jury, however, found him guilty of five counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, four counts of rape, and four counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
The court’s decision resulted in a significant sentence: 23 years in prison, with an additional one-year license period, meaning he will not be eligible for release until the Parole Board deems him safe to re-enter society.
Edgar is also required to register as a sex offender for life, and he was issued restraining orders along with a sexual harm prevention order to protect future potential victims.
Following the sentencing, a former friend of Edgar’s described him as a 'monster.' She revealed that despite his previous prison sentence, Edgar had managed to escape public scrutiny for his past crimes.
She also noted that he is widely regarded in Blackpool as a member of the 'Peaky Blinders' due to his distinctive style of dress, which contributed to his local notoriety.
