JEFFREY BIRKETT OF POCKLINGTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN HULL
A computer support technician was discovered possessing disturbing images depicting child abuse and bestiality following a comprehensive investigation into highly unsettling online messages.IT professional Jeffrey Birkett later realized that actual children were involved in the abuse, and it was "beginning to dawn" on him just how serious and disturbing the material was.
He attrributed his initial viewing of the images to increased isolation during lockdown, but authorities found the evidence against him to be "robust," Hull Crown Court was told.
Birkett, 47, of The Oval, Pocklington, pleaded guilty on August 21, 2020, to charges of possessing indecent images of children and extreme pornography.
Prosecutor Stephen Welch explained that the National Crime Agency intercepted messages described as "extremely disturbing," containing indecent material.
"An investigation was launched into who had actually been dispatching these messages," Mr Welch said.
These messages were later traced back to Birkett’s residence in Pocklington, although no charges were specifically filed related to the message exchange.
Nonetheless, his computer equipment was seized.
Authorities found two Category C indecent images of children, along with 10 images of extreme pornography involving bestiality, and 40 videos.
Defense lawyer David Godfrey remarked that the offenses were troubling and disturbing, emphasizing that Birkett needed help.
"He readily appreciates that his behavior has brought considerable shame on him and those around him," Mr Godfrey stated.
"He recognizes that there is a victim in every child involved.
He has some difficulty articulating why he did what he did, and he is finding it very hard to understand himself." The evidence collected by investigators was described as "robust," and Birkett had pleaded guilty.
It was noted that he has worked within the IT industry, has been married for over six years, and was previously married.
During the pandemic lockdown, he became isolated and was "really struggling" emotionally.
He had no prior convictions.
Judge Michael Slater addressed Birkett directly, saying, "I accept that it's beginning to dawn on you how serious these matters are.
It’s clear to me that you are both contrite and extremely apprehensive of today’s proceedings, and so you should be." Birkett was sentenced to an eight-month prison term suspended for two years, alongside 150 hours of unpaid work and 30 days of rehabilitation.
He was also ordered to comply with a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and must register as a sex offender for 10 years.
His computer equipment will be confiscated.
Judge Slater warned, "Should you breach it in any way, you will be brought before me, and you will have a hard job persuading me not to send you immediately to prison.
