JASON NORBURY FROM WHITBY SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL ATTACK ON EX-PARTNER IN YORKSHIRE
In a disturbing incident that unfolded in Whitby, a 29-year-old man named Jason Norbury was convicted and subsequently sentenced to prison after a violent assault on his former partner. The attack, which took place at a friend’s residence in Whitby, involved a series of aggressive acts that left the young woman, aged 19, with visible injuries and emotional trauma.According to court proceedings, Norbury’s assault occurred around 8:30 pm on August 1. The victim, who is a mother of two, was involved in a heated argument with Norbury, who had been drinking heavily at the time. The dispute was triggered when Norbury demanded to see her phone, driven by suspicions that she might be communicating with other men. The young woman complied initially, passing her mobile device to him, but tensions escalated quickly.
As Norbury began scrolling through her phone, she requested its return. Court reports indicate that Norbury had a history of similar jealous and controlling behavior, which contributed to the escalation. A struggle ensued over the phone, during which Norbury snatched it and attempted to break the device. The victim tried to retrieve her phone, but Norbury refused to relinquish it. In the process, he punched her twice in the face, causing redness and scratches on both cheeks. He also scratched her face and bit her on the upper arm, leaving severe marks that were described as 'vivid' by the court.
After the assault, the victim managed to recover her phone and fled the scene. Norbury pursued her outside the house, shouting and throwing soil from a plant pot directly into her face. Despite her efforts to escape, he continued to follow her into the street, where she sought refuge at a bus stop. Norbury’s aggressive behavior persisted as he shouted at her, prompting her to call the police. The authorities arrived shortly thereafter, arresting Norbury at the scene.
He was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and admitted to the offence during court proceedings. The incident was characterized by the prosecutor, Nicola Hoskins, as an act of degradation, especially considering Norbury’s act of throwing soil into the victim’s face. The court also noted Norbury’s prior criminal record, which includes four convictions for vehicle-related offenses and breaches of court orders.
During the sentencing hearing, solicitor Graham Parkin highlighted Norbury’s struggles with drug and alcohol issues and expressed remorse for his actions. However, Judge Simon Hickey emphasized the seriousness of the assault, particularly noting the severity of the bites on the victim’s arm. The judge described Norbury’s behavior as unacceptable and driven by jealousy, which he deemed a significant factor in the case.
Ultimately, Norbury was sentenced to eight months in prison. The judge ordered that he serve half of this sentence behind bars before being released on prison licence. The court’s decision underscores the gravity of the assault and the need to protect victims from such violent and degrading conduct in the future.
