JARED BASSETT AND HIS HORRIFIC CRIMES IN NORTHAMPTON AND NORTH WALES

Jared Graham Bassett’s reprehensible conduct has left a lasting and devastating impact on his victims, with the trauma described as having a 'severe emotional effect.' A man responsible for historic and heinous sexual offences against two young girls has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 20 years.

This case has drawn significant attention from the judicial system and highlights the long-lasting consequences of such crimes.

The court proceedings revealed that Bassett, who was between the ages of 18 and 25 at the time of the offences, engaged in an extensive and systematic campaign of abuse.

Despite denying all allegations, he was convicted after a thorough trial.

The sentencing took place at Mold Crown Court in Wales on November 5, where authorities detailed the scope and impact of his actions.

During the trial, it was uncovered that Bassett's offending spree began while he was living at a holiday camp in North Wales.

His abusive conduct did not stop there; instead, it persisted across various addresses throughout North Wales and even beyond into foreign territories, continuing until around 2007.

His sordid campaign was only uncovered after one particularly distressed girl managed to alert a shopkeeper, prompting an investigation.

A victim impact statement, read out by prosecutor Robert Edwards, vividly illustrated the profound psychological scars inflicted by Bassett.

The older victim, now an adult woman, described feeling as if she had been pulled back into childhood while recounting her ordeal.

She shared her ongoing struggles with intimate relationships, explaining that even a small touch could trigger an exaggerated, reflexive reaction, underscoring the deep emotional wounds caused by the abuse.

She emphasized that no punishment could fully restore her lost innocence or childhood.

The younger victim, also now grown, recounted her own painful journey that included self-harm through wrist-cutting and alcohol consumption, as she struggled to come to terms with her ordeal.

Her relief upon being believed was contrasted by enduring trust issues with both men and women.

In her words, she expressed how Bassett’s actions robbed her of the joy and intimacy she should have experienced, stating, “Sex feels more like a chore.

He (Bassett) has taken that enjoyment and special moment from me.” Defense attorney Mark Kelly insisted that Bassett maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.

He also argued that a lengthy prison sentence would impose significant emotional and financial hardship on Bassett’s own young family.

However, the judge, Her Honour Judge Nicola Saffman, pointed out that one of the victims who initially reported her abuse to a shopkeeper had been dismissed by authorities, who wrongly believed that her evidence alone would not suffice for prosecution.

It was only subsequent investigations and Bassett’s eventual arrest that led to his conviction.

The judge described Bassett’s actions as a 'campaign' of systematic abuse, remarking, “You have blighted their childhood and, in doing so, blighted their adult lives.” She noted the profound psychological damage inflicted, which manifested in the victims’ current states—one being hysterical and distressed, the other emotionally withdrawn and blunt.

Bassett was sentenced to 20 years in prison for multiple rapes of the older girl and two rapes of the younger girl.

In addition, he received concurrent sentences ranging from five to 17 years for other sexual offences.

The investigation was a collaborative effort, with Detective Inspector Iolo Edwards of the North Wales Police Amethyst Team highlighting the close cooperation with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) team.

Edwards expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the trial and reaffirmed the police’s commitment to pursue justice for victims of sexual violence.

The authorities also acknowledged the victims’ resilience and their crucial role in supporting the case to reach this stage, emphasizing the importance of justice in these tragic circumstances.
