JANNICK WUTTKE FROM STOKE CAUGHT WITH NEARLY 1,600 CHILD PORN IMAGES AND NOW LIVING IN GERMANY
In a disturbing case that has garnered significant attention, Jannick Wuttke, a student originally from Stoke, was found to possess an alarming collection of nearly 1,600 child abuse images. The incident came to light when Wuttke took his laptop to a local repair shop in Stoke, claiming that his device was experiencing severe performance issues, including slowness and frequent freezing.Staff at the Stoke store conducted an analysis of the laptop and discovered evidence of indecent photographs, which prompted immediate notification to the police. The authorities responded swiftly, leading to Wuttke's arrest and subsequent investigation.
During the court proceedings at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, it was revealed that Wuttke, aged 21 at the time, was a student enrolled at Staffordshire University. Despite the serious nature of the evidence, he was permitted to continue and complete his academic course. Wuttke, who was formerly residing on Shelton Old Road in Stoke, has since relocated back to his homeland of Germany, where he is preparing to commence an apprenticeship.
On the day of his sentencing, Wuttke appeared in court and was handed an eight-month prison sentence, which was suspended for 18 months. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years and was required to pay costs amounting to £300. It is important to note that, due to jurisdictional limitations, the UK court's sentence does not extend to Germany. Wuttke will need to inform authorities if he plans to return to Britain in the future.
Prosecutor Paul Farrow provided details about the initial discovery, which dates back to October 1, 2014. Wuttke was arrested at that time and cooperated fully during police interviews. During his interview, he admitted that he had been viewing pornography since he was 14 years old, coinciding with when he first gained access to a computer. He further disclosed that he had searched for terms related to children and had begun downloading child abuse images out of curiosity, a habit that persisted over several years.
Following his arrest, law enforcement officials seized additional devices, including several computers and a memory stick, where further illicit material was uncovered. Wuttke pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing indecent images of a child on December 1, 2014. The images included 112 classified as Category A, indicating the most serious level of abuse, along with 142 Category B images and 1,306 Category C images.
Judge Paul Glenn commented on the unusual circumstances of the case, noting Wuttke's current residency status outside the UK. He stated, “I don’t think an immediate prison sentence is appropriate. I would like to put your treatment on a proper basis, but you need to go back to Germany.” The judge emphasized the importance of treatment and rehabilitation, but also highlighted the jurisdictional limitations that prevent the UK from enforcing certain aspects of the sentence in Germany.
