JAMIE GUNN FROM HAVERHILL SENTENCED UNDER NEW LAWS IN IPSWICH FOR GROOMING 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL

In a landmark case that marks the first use of recently enacted legislation targeting paedophiles, Jamie Gunn, a 25-year-old man from Haverhill, Suffolk, was sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court for grooming and engaging in sexual activities with a 13-year-old girl. Gunn, who served as a teaching assistant at a local school, admitted to seven separate offences related to his misconduct, leading to a three-year prison sentence.

Gunn's crimes came to light after the victim's mother noticed suspicious activity on her daughter's computer. It was revealed during court proceedings that the girl had initially contacted Gunn via email, leveraging his role as an information technology specialist at the school. Over the course of approximately a month, the two exchanged explicit text messages and emails, which ultimately culminated in Gunn meeting the girl in person for sexual activity.

Under the new legislation, which came into force in May 2004 as part of the Sexual Offences Act 2003, the penalties for such offences have been significantly increased. The Act raised the maximum sentence for sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 16 from two years to a maximum of 14 years. For offences involving a girl under the age of 13, the law now prescribes a maximum life sentence. Additionally, the Act introduced the offence of sexual grooming, specifically aimed at combating paedophiles who use internet chatrooms and electronic communication to contact children.

During the sentencing, Judge John Holt emphasized that the girl was not to blame for what had happened and that Gunn was solely responsible for grooming her and arranging the sexual encounter. Gunn was also ordered to be placed on the Sexual Offenders’ Register indefinitely and was banned from working with children for an unspecified period. The judge stated that Gunn would serve half of his three-year sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

Prosecutor Robert Sadd explained that the offences came to light after the girl’s mother discovered suspicious activity on her computer. He detailed that Gunn and the girl had exchanged explicit messages over a period of about a month, but clarified that Gunn had not forced the girl into sexual activity and had asked her if she was certain about her decision.

Roger Harrison, representing Gunn, told the court that his client had fully admitted to the police, taking responsibility and describing his actions as “a stupid mistake.” Harrison also noted that Gunn had not entered the school with the intention of meeting young girls and did not believe he possessed paedophile tendencies. Despite his remorse, Gunn was sentenced to three years in prison, with the court highlighting the significance of the new laws in addressing such crimes more severely than before.
