JAMES WEBBER SENTENCED IN YORKSHIRE FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE AND ONLINE CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
A man responsible for manipulating, blackmailing, and causing severe trauma to a 12-year-old girl has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for multiple serious child sex offenses.James Michael David Webber, aged 39 and residing on Hollygarth Lane in Beal, near Selby, was handed a 13-year prison sentence at York Crown Court on Friday.
Webber’s conviction followed a comprehensive trial during which he was found guilty of seven distinct charges.
These included blackmail, two counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, possession of indecent images of children across three categories, and possession of extreme pornography.
The court proceedings revealed the disturbing details of his misconduct, which spanned over a period of time and involved the exploitation of a vulnerable young girl.
The court heard that in May 2020, Webber engaged in a manipulative and coercive campaign against the 12-year-old victim.
Using the social media platform Snapchat, he coerced her into sending explicit images of herself.
Webber’s threats were particularly sinister; he claimed he could see her location through the app and threatened to harm her family if she refused to comply further.
His intimidation tactics left the young girl feeling terrified and powerless.
When the victim refused to send additional images, Webber callously distributed the images she had already sent to others, causing her immense emotional distress.
The psychological impact on the young girl has been profound, and mental health professionals have indicated that she will likely carry the scars of this trauma for many years to come.
The bravery of the victim in coming forward and reporting the abuse was highly praised by police officials, who acknowledged her courage in the face of such a traumatic ordeal.
Webber’s actions did not stop there.
Authorities traced him through his IP address, leading to his arrest.
Devices seized from Webber’s possession contained a disturbing collection of indecent images and videos of children.
Specifically, investigators uncovered 97 Category A images—considered the most severe form of child exploitation material—along with 149 Category B and 144 Category C images.
Additionally, four images and videos depicting extreme pornography were recovered.
The court was informed that Webber had been actively creating new Snapchat accounts just days before his arrest, attempting to evade detection.
In a further indication of his guilt, he deleted the Snapchat application from his phone less than a minute before police arrived to question him.
Detective Constable Jenna Hallewell, who led the investigation, emphasized that a crucial element in securing Webber’s conviction was the evidence obtained from his digital devices by North Yorkshire Police’s Digital Forensic Team.
Despite the overwhelming evidence, Webber denied all charges and showed no remorse for his actions.
His behavior and attitude throughout the proceedings underscored his lack of remorse and continued disregard for the harm he caused.
In her closing remarks, DC Hallewell paid tribute to the victim’s bravery, stating, “I’d like to pay tribute to the victim and her bravery in coming forward, which has been truly incredible.
Her courage has ensured that Webber is no longer free to target and victimize children for his own twisted gratification.” She also stressed the importance of victims speaking out, as their cooperation is vital in helping law enforcement dismantle online abuse networks and protect other children from similar harm.
