JAMES WAIN CREWE PAEDOPHILE SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS FOR ABUSE OF TWO GIRLS OVER 20 YEARS AGO

In a case that has spanned over two decades, James Wain, a man aged 89 and residing on Rigby Avenue in Crewe, has been sentenced to three years in prison following his conviction for the indecent assault of two young girls. The assaults, which occurred more than 20 years ago, involved victims aged just five at the time of the abuse. Wain faced eight charges related to these offences, all of which he initially pleaded not guilty to. However, after a thorough legal process, he was found guilty at an earlier hearing and subsequently sentenced at Chester Crown Court on the recent Friday.

Family members of one of the victims expressed their relief and satisfaction with the outcome of the case. The mother of one of the girls, who requested anonymity for legal reasons, shared her feelings about the ordeal. She revealed that the abuse happened when her daughter was between five and nine years old, and that the family only discovered the truth by chance. She explained, “The girls were between five and nine years old when it happened and we only learned of it by a fluke. Neither of them would have said anything if it hadn’t come out the way it did.”

She recounted how her family was completely unaware of the abuse at the time, emphasizing the shock and distress they experienced upon learning the truth. Her husband promptly reported the matter to the police once they found out, praising the officers involved for their professionalism and sensitivity. The police officers, Detective Constables Liz Condon and Dave Rowlands, were commended for their compassionate handling of the case. The family’s journey from disclosure to conviction took approximately 18 months, during which Wain attempted to shift blame onto others, claiming innocence and implicating someone else in the heinous acts. The victim’s mother expressed her daughter’s anger and disappointment at Wain’s attempt to evade responsibility, stating, “My daughter was upset and angry he could try to blame someone else for what he had done. She told the police it was James Wain.”

Interestingly, neither the victims nor their families attended the court session where Wain was sentenced. Despite their absence, the family expressed their satisfaction with the verdict. “We were happy with him being found guilty,” the mother said. “That was the icing on the cake, him getting three years.”

Detective Constable Liz Condon, who led the investigation, highlighted the betrayal of trust involved in this case. She explained that Wain exploited the confidence placed in him by parents who believed their children were safe in his company, as he was considered a family friend. “Wain breached this trust and caused untold anguish to his victims,” she said. “For years, they kept the memories of the abuse to themselves, and this has affected them greatly. Now they have finally broken their silence, they have been able to get the help and support they need to come to terms with what happened to them, and I hope in some way, this successful conviction has helped in their road to recovery.”
