JAMES THOMAS AND HIS SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN CARMARTHEN

James Thomas, a 42-year-old man residing on Mansel Street in Carmarthen, has been sentenced to a lengthy and stringent extended prison term after being convicted of multiple severe sexual offences involving young girls. The crimes he committed span a disturbing timeline and have left deep psychological scars on his victims.

The tribunal heard that Thomas was found guilty of 21 separate charges, which included the rape of a girl under the age of 13 on multiple occasions, sexual assault, and the incitement of a child to indulge in sexual activities. The conviction came after a trial held at Swansea Crown Court, where the court reviewed testimony and evidence related to his crimes. Thomas passionately denied all charges, which included allegations of oral, anal, and vaginal rape. Nevertheless, the jury found him guilty of all counts, confirming the seriousness and brutality of his actions.

The court statements detailed the profound trauma inflicted upon his two young victims. Their victim impact statements revealed how the abuse had devastated their lives, causing ongoing psychological issues such as persistent nightmares, flashbacks, and feelings of intense fear around men. Both girls reported feelings of profound isolation, with some resorting to self-harm as a way to cope with their emotional pain. As victims of sexual offences, they are entitled to lifelong legal anonymity to protect their identities and future well-being.

According to court records, James Thomas has a criminal history that predated these offences, though at the time of the trial, he had no previous convictions. His prior convictions include nine counts of raping a child under 13, two counts of inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and ten counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, confirmed during a trial in March. During the sentencing hearing on Monday, Thomas’s legal representative, Ian Ibrahim, emphasized that his client, a father of two, had generally maintained employment within the car industry, providing for his family. Ibrahim also highlighted that Thomas had recently experienced the loss of both his parents, framing his personal hardships.

The presiding judge, Catherine Richards, addressed the court and condemned Thomas’s actions. She described his conduct as a manipulative and sustained “campaign of rape” targeting two vulnerable young girls. Judge Richards explained that after considering all evidence and a pre-sentence report, she concluded that Thomas posed a significant risk of reoffending, warranting the imposition of an extended sentence. This decision is aimed at safeguarding the public, especially other minors, from further harm.

As a result, James Thomas was sentenced to an extended term of 24 years, which combines 22 years in custody with an additional two years on licence. He is required to serve at least two-thirds of his custodial sentence before he can be eligible for parole, though the ultimate decision will be made by the Parole Board based on his behavior and risk assessment. Additionally, Thomas will be registered as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.

Following the sentencing, Mandy Tobias, a district crown prosecutor with the Crown Prosecution Service, issued a statement emphasizing the gravity of the case. She noted that rape is an especially devastating crime that causes lifelong trauma for victims. Tobias praised the courage shown by the young girls who came forward to testify, helping ensure Thomas’s prosecution and ultimate imprisonment. This case stands as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children from such heinous acts and the justice that can be achieved through perseverance and the legal system.
