December 2012 No jail for man who had hundreds of child abuse images on computer A MAN caught with hundreds of pornographic images of children has avoided going to jail. James Ryder, 32, was found with 351 indecent images on his computers when police searched his home, Plymouth Crown Court heard. They included nine in the most serious category. Ryder, of Renown Street, Keyham, admitted seven charges of making indecent images of children and one of inciting an unknown person to distribute such images. Recorder Michael Hubbard told him: “You already know the impact of what you have done. You will suffer humiliation and indignity for a long time to come. “What you get up to behind closed doors is no secret now, that is why you are here.” David Gittins, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said police found the pictures when they searched his home on April 19. He said Ryder admitted chatting online with a paedophile via a pornographic website. Mr Gittins added he pretended he had children and said he told the person he liked to look at images of underage children. He added the person sent him the images. Emma Birt, for Ryder, said: “He has shown genuine remorse. This has shattered his life. He is assessed as a low risk of re-offending and needs help. “He is the sort of person if given the chance would take the ball and run with it and never trouble these courts again.” She added he had worked as a maintenance man at a doctor’s surgery but had been dismissed because of the offence. Recorder Hubbard sentenced him to a two-year community order under probation supervision with the Internet Sex Offender Treatment Programme and the Low-Intensity Alcohol programme. He said: “Because of your early guilty plea, your remorse, because this is your first conviction and you have lost your job, I am just about able not to send you to prison today.” Ryder will have to sign the sex offender register for seven years.
