JAMES RIDLEY FROM HORDEN SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS FOR RAPE IN DURHAM

In March 2018, a disturbing case unfolded involving James Ridley, a man from Horden, who was convicted of raping a teenage girl during a night out. The incident occurred when the young woman, after consuming alcohol and trying to sleep off her hangover, was vulnerable and beginning to doze off. The Durham Crown Court heard that the teenage girl awoke during the attack, but she was overwhelmed with fear and chose to remain still, pretending to be asleep in an attempt to avoid further harm. Following the attack, the victim managed to contact a friend, seeking help and support. She also spoke with a work colleague about what had happened, which prompted her to notify the police. Law enforcement officers responded swiftly, arresting Ridley at his residence. During police interviews, Ridley claimed that he believed the sexual encounter was consensual, a statement that was thoroughly examined during the trial.

Ridley, aged 29 and residing on Hawthorn Crescent in Horden, maintained this account throughout the proceedings, which lasted three days. Despite his claims, the jury found him guilty beyond reasonable doubt of the rape. However, he was acquitted of a separate sexual assault charge related to the same incident.

The presiding judge, Simon Hickey, addressed Ridley after the verdict, emphasizing that the conviction was based on clear and compelling evidence. The judge ordered Ridley to be remanded in custody pending the preparation of a background probation report, which would inform sentencing decisions.

During the sentencing hearing, Lorraine Mustard, representing the defendant, argued that Ridley was not considered to pose a high risk of reoffending. Nevertheless, Judge Hickey sentenced him to eight years in prison. Additionally, Ridley was subjected to a restraining order that prohibits him from contacting the victim for a period of 15 years. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.
