JAMES MILLER FROM DARLINGTON ESCAPES JAIL AFTER HOARDING NEARLY 9,000 CHILD INDECENT IMAGES
In a case that has shocked the community of Darlington, James Miller, a 57-year-old IT manager, was found to have accumulated an alarming collection of nearly 9,000 indecent images of children over a span of ten years. The disturbing discovery was made after police examined his computer hard drive and found additional illicit material on a CD at his residence on Leafield Road.
According to reports, Miller had been involved in the downloading and viewing of these vile images for a decade, claiming that his actions were driven by curiosity.
During police interviews, he asserted that he possessed extensive knowledge of computers but denied using the computers belonging to his employer, a company based in Shildon, to access the illegal content.
Prosecutor Rachel Masters presented evidence to Teesside Crown Court, revealing that the police analysis of Miller’s PC uncovered a total of 8,979 indecent images.
Among these, 540 were classified as level four, and six images fell into the most serious category, level five, which is reserved for the most heinous material involving children.
Legal representatives for Miller, including his defense lawyer Ben Pegman, highlighted his previously good character and long-standing employment history.
Mr.
Pegman cautioned the court that imposing a lengthy prison sentence might hinder any opportunity for rehabilitation, especially regarding Miller’s sexual urges.
During sentencing, Judge Peter Bowers acknowledged the gravity of the offense, stating, “This type of offending is the product of many acts of abuse on children, some in this country and some abroad.
That sort of abuse will continue as long as there is a ready-made market for people to view it.” Despite the severity of the crime, the judge emphasized the importance of Miller’s participation in a sex offenders’ treatment program run by the Probation Service.
Recognizing Miller’s honesty with authorities, Judge Bowers decided against immediate imprisonment.
Instead, he sentenced Miller to nine months in jail, suspended for two years, allowing him to undergo the necessary rehabilitative treatment.
Miller has also been required to register as a sex offender and will be under community supervision for the next two years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct and compliance with legal obligations.
