JAMES HEMPHILL CONVICTED IN BEDFORD FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AFTER ESCAPE AND REPEATED OFFENDING
James Hemphill, a man with a long and troubling history of sexual offences involving minors, has been found guilty of serious charges in Bedford.The 67-year-old, who previously resided in Houghton Conquest, was at the center of a complex case that spanned multiple countries and years of legal battles.
Hemphill’s criminal history is marked by a decade-long manhunt by the FBI.
In 1994, he pleaded guilty to a child sex offence in the United States but managed to evade sentencing by fleeing to Scotland before he could be formally sentenced.
His disappearance prompted a nationwide search, and he was placed on the FBI’s most wanted list, where he remained for ten years.
It was not until 2004 that Hemphill was finally apprehended, extradited back to the United States, and subsequently incarcerated.
However, his legal troubles did not end there.
In April 2008, he was deported from the United States and returned to the United Kingdom, where he settled in Bedford.
Since then, he has been living quietly until recent events brought his past crimes back into the spotlight.
In late 2022, Hemphill’s troubling behavior resurfaced in Kettering, a town not far from Bedford.
He engaged in inappropriate communication with a teenage girl, asking her if she wanted him to buy her underwear.
He also inquired whether she was interested in adult toys and if she would like to share a bed with him.
These actions raised serious concerns and prompted the girl to confide in a family member, who then reported the matter to Northamptonshire Police.
Following the report, Hemphill was swiftly arrested and charged with multiple offences.
The charges included causing or inciting a girl aged between 13 and 15 to engage in sexual activity, as well as failing to comply with the notification requirements of the Sex Offenders’ Register, which he was legally obliged to adhere to due to his past convictions.
His trial concluded at Northampton Crown Court on Monday, June 18.
After careful consideration of the evidence, the court found Hemphill guilty on both counts.
The verdict marks a significant moment in the ongoing effort to hold him accountable for his actions.
Hemphill is scheduled to return to Northampton Crown Court in September for sentencing.
The case underscores the importance of vigilance and the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in monitoring individuals with a history of sexual offences, especially those who have previously evaded justice for extended periods.
