MAN IN FEAR OF DEMONS SLASHES PARTNER'S THROAT
A man named James Hamilton, aged 60, was found to have committed manslaughter rather than murder after fatally stabbing his partner Patricia Anne Durrant, aged 65, inside their residence in Llandysul, Ceredigion, in March 2014.Court proceedings revealed that Hamilton believed that demons were on the verge of invading their home and killing both of them in a horrific manner.
Hamilton, who was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, admitted that he caused Ms Durrant’s death with a knife in an attempt to prevent her from experiencing what he described as a 'fate worse than death.' Although he had previously received treatment for mental health issues, he had stopped his medication and had ceased contact with mental health services.
He denied intentionally murdering Ms Durrant but accepted a plea of guilty to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility.
It was also reported that following the assault, Hamilton tried to take his own life by stabbing himself in the neck and stomach.
He was subsequently detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act.
This case underscores the devastating impact of untreated mental illness, particularly when driven by psychotic delusions.
