JAMES DOWSON FROM LEEDS SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND VIOLENT ATTACKS IN LEEDS AND CHAPELTOWN
In a series of disturbing incidents that have shocked the community in Leeds, James Dowson, a 25-year-old man from Carberry Road, Burley, has been sentenced to a total of eight years in prison for a combination of violent and sexual offenses. The court proceedings revealed a troubling pattern of violence and abuse committed by Dowson, who was already on bail for a previous assault when he committed further heinous acts.
The case was heard at Leeds Crown Court, where it was established that on July 28, Dowson, along with his accomplice Charles Letizia, 23, of Conway Mount, Harehills, carried out a brutal attack on a 16-year-old boy in the Chapeltown area.
During this assault, Dowson physically assaulted the youth by kicking him in the chest and punching him in the face while the victim was on the ground.
The attack resulted in the boy suffering a fractured jaw, a serious injury that underscored the severity of the violence inflicted.
Details emerged that Dowson was arrested the very next day following the attack.
He was formally charged with grievous bodily harm and was released on bail pending further proceedings.
The court heard that Dowson’s violent behavior did not stop there.
On August 17 and 18, he committed a series of sexual offenses against a 13-year-old girl.
The young girl was assaulted twice on a bus and a third time at Dowson’s residence.
Prosecutor Timothy Capstick described the distressing encounters, stating, “She continually pushed him away and told him to stop.
She was clearly in pain.” Further details revealed that Dowson was arrested on August 21.
During police questioning, he admitted to the assaults but claimed to have limited recollection of the events, citing intoxication from consuming approximately 20 cans of Stella Artois lager.
Despite his claims of alcohol-induced amnesia, Dowson pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to the 16-year-old boy and to sexual assault and sexual assault by penetration involving the 13-year-old girl.
In mitigation, Dowson’s legal representative, Adrian Dent, acknowledged his client’s struggles with substance abuse, stating, “He has spent a good deal of his time abusing drugs and alcohol.
He does seem to be recognising he does need some help.
He apologizes for what he has done.” Judge James Spencer sentenced Dowson to two years in prison for the attack on the 16-year-old boy and an additional six years for the sexual offenses against the young girl.
The judge’s remarks were stern and direct, emphasizing the gravity of Dowson’s actions: “You took advantage of her.
She was hurt and frightened.” In connection with the same incident, Charles Letizia was also held accountable.
He pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm related to the attack on the 16-year-old boy and was sentenced to two years in prison.
The case highlights the ongoing issues of violence and sexual abuse within the Leeds community, raising concerns about the safety of vulnerable individuals in the area.
