JAMES BRODERICK FROM MIDDLESBROUGH SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN TEESSIDE
In a case that has spanned decades, James Broderick, a resident of Middlesbrough, has been convicted and sentenced for heinous sexual crimes committed against two young girls during his youth.The crimes, which took place in the late 1960s and 1970s, only came to light after a lengthy investigation and legal proceedings that culminated in his sentencing at Teesside Crown Court.
Broderick, now aged 66 and living on Cranmore Road in the Pallister Park area of Middlesbrough, was found guilty of multiple charges, including the rape of a girl when he was just 14 years old, as well as serious sexual assaults on another girl.
The court heard that the first victim, who was a primary school-aged child at the time, endured a terrifying ordeal during which Broderick threatened her life by placing a pillow over her head.
He also subjected her to repeated sexual abuse, leaving her with lasting emotional scars.
The second victim was also a young girl, and Broderick's abuse of her began when she was still in primary school.
The court was told that his actions caused her significant pain and fear, and that the trauma has persisted into her adult life.
She described her experience as deeply damaging, stating that although she knew her treatment was wrong, she lacked understanding of sex at the time.
She recounted being hit and called ugly by Broderick, which contributed to her ongoing trust issues, depression, and the need for counseling and medication.
During the proceedings, prosecutor Shaun Dodds revealed that Broderick himself had been a victim of childhood abuse, following the death of his mother at a very young age.
This background was considered by the court in assessing his culpability.
Initially, Broderick denied all 11 charges brought against him.
However, on May 16, just as his trial was set to commence, he entered guilty pleas to the charges of rape, eight counts of indecent assault, and two counts of inciting a girl to commit gross indecency.
It was noted that Broderick has no prior criminal convictions.
Judge Howard Crowson addressed the court, emphasizing that all of Broderick's offenses occurred over 50 years ago, when he was under 18.
The judge highlighted that Broderick's rape of one victim happened when he was only 14 years old.
The judge remarked, “You forced yourself upon her.
She was petrified.
If I were sentencing an adult for this offence, the starting point would be 10 years.
That approach cannot be directly applied to a child offender.” He further explained that although Broderick was not being sentenced as an adult, the court must consider his age at the time of the offenses, his mental development, and the possibility of rehabilitation.
The judge acknowledged that Broderick's own behavior had been influenced by past abuse, which somewhat reduced his culpability.
Ultimately, Broderick was sentenced to three years and one month in prison.
The judge made it clear that this sentence is significantly lower than what would be imposed if he had committed these crimes as an adult.
Additionally, Broderick was ordered to comply with police notification requirements for the rest of his life and will be subject to supervision upon his release from prison, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct.
