JAMES BETTS FROM CORNWALL SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN BUDE AND POOL
A young woman from Cornwall has courageously shared the profound and lasting impact that her life has endured following her traumatic experience of being sexually abused by a predator during her vulnerable teenage years. The incident dates back to when she was just 14 years old, and the perpetrator, James Betts, who was 18 at the time, targeted her with malicious intent.
James Betts, now 23, engaged in sexual acts with the young girl, and this disturbing episode took place when he was a few years older.
The assault was not only physical but also involved the recording of part of the encounter, which Betts then boasted about to his friends.
This revelation added a further layer of cruelty to his actions, as he shared intimate footage of the abuse, showing a blatant disregard for her dignity and well-being.
Betts, who was previously residing in Bude but whose recent address was listed as Pool, faced trial earlier this week.
The court proceedings culminated in a conviction by a majority jury on multiple serious charges, including two counts of penetrative sexual activity with a girl under the age of 16, possession of indecent photographs of a child, and the act of showing such images to others.
These charges underscore the severity of his misconduct and the criminal nature of his actions.
On Friday, October 22, Betts appeared once again at Truro Crown Court, where a victim impact statement was read aloud.
The young woman described the profound psychological scars left by the abuse, revealing that she now suffers from severe anxiety, has engaged in self-harm, and has even attempted to take her own life.
Her words conveyed the deep emotional toll that the trauma has inflicted, stating, "The trauma never ends.
He's lived his life as I plod through each day as a young girl who can't live my best life." During the sentencing hearing, Betts was represented by Piers Norsworthy, who argued that his client had changed significantly since the offenses.
Norsworthy explained that Betts had hit rock bottom, becoming homeless and battling illegal drug use.
Since then, he claimed, Betts had worked hard to rebuild his life, overcome his addiction, and secure employment.
Norsworthy also noted that the explicit video of the sexual act was never recovered and was not widely circulated, suggesting some mitigation in the case.
However, Judge Simon Carr did not find these arguments sufficient to mitigate the gravity of Betts’s actions.
In his sentencing remarks, the judge emphasized the vulnerability of the victim, who was in the care system at the time.
He pointed out that Betts was aware of her age—she had explicitly told him she was 14—and yet he deliberately pursued her, knowing full well that their sexual activity was illegal and morally wrong.
Judge Carr detailed how Betts had bought her gifts and tobacco, taken her to the cinema, and engaged in flirtatious texting, all while knowing her age and vulnerability.
The court heard that Betts had full sexual intercourse with her, as well as oral sex, which he recorded on his phone.
The judge highlighted that Betts’s motivation appeared to be to relive the moment and boast about it by showing the footage to others, further demonstrating his callous attitude towards the victim.
Additionally, authorities found indecent images of children on Betts’s phone, further illustrating his predatory behavior.
As a result of his conviction, Betts was sentenced to four and a half years in prison.
The court also ordered that he must sign the sex offenders register for life, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
