JAMES BENTLEY FROM ST ALBANS SENTENCED FOR POSSESSING OVER 11,900 INDECENT IMAGES OF CHILDREN NEAR LOCAL SCHOOLS

In a serious case that has shocked the community of St Albans, James Bentley, a resident of Hopground Close, was sentenced after being found in possession of an alarming number of indecent images of minors. The investigation was sparked by disturbing reports from students at Beaumont School, who observed a man sitting in his vehicle outside the school premises, taking photographs of teenage girls. This incident occurred in February of 2014, prompting police to act swiftly.

When officers approached Bentley the following morning at the same location, he was detained on suspicion of a public order offence. This initial arrest led to a comprehensive search of his home, where authorities uncovered a disturbing collection of digital material. Among the items seized were over 11,900 indecent images and videos depicting minors, categorized at various levels of severity. The collection included 11,905 images and movies rated at level one, which is considered the lowest level of indecency, along with 40 at level two, six at level three, and 19 at level four, the most severe.

Further incriminating evidence was found under Bentley’s bed, including a Beaumont School prospectus, which he admitted to keeping for his own gratification. During his police interview, Bentley openly expressed that he found the girl on the cover of the prospectus attractive, estimating her age to be around 14 or 15 years old. He also confessed to having taken photographs of pupils outside Loreto College and Oakwood Primary School, revealing a disturbing pattern of behavior that spanned approximately two decades. Bentley admitted to actively collecting images and footage of females in public spaces, including libraries and parks, where he had worked for 15 years at St Albans Central Library.

In addition to the images, authorities discovered an extensive collection of approximately 58,000 images and 600 videos depicting girls and women engaged in everyday activities. These were stored across various locations, including the library and public parks in St Albans. Bentley’s inappropriate behavior extended to an incident where he asked a colleague to pick up leaflets and then secretly photographed her while she was bending down.

Legal proceedings at St Albans Crown Court saw prosecutor William Noble detail the extent of Bentley’s offenses. He highlighted Bentley’s admission that he found the girl on the cover attractive and acknowledged her age as likely being 14 or 15. The court was told that Bentley had kept the prospectus for his own gratification. The prosecutor also revealed that Bentley had been gathering such images and footage for around 20 years, demonstrating a long-standing pattern of offending.

Defense lawyer Kate Smith urged the court to consider Bentley’s early guilty plea to seven counts of making indecent images of children and three counts of possessing such images. She emphasized that Bentley recognized the harm caused by his actions, not only to the community but also to his own family and himself. Smith argued that this acknowledgment should serve as motivation for Bentley to avoid reoffending.

In sentencing, Judge Marie Catterson imposed a three-month community order, which includes supervision and mandatory participation in a sex offender treatment program. She acknowledged Bentley’s apparent remorse and his recognition of the need to change his behavior. Additionally, Bentley was issued a Sexual Offences Prevention Order that will last for ten years. This order restricts him from taking photographs of individuals without their consent and prohibits unsupervised contact with children under 16 unless explicitly permitted by a parent who is aware of his conviction. The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat child exploitation and protect vulnerable members of society from such predatory behavior.
