MATTHEW VICKERS OF ST ALBANS SENTENCED TO NINE MONTHS FOR CATFISHING TEENAGE BOYS
In September 2017, a paedophile from St Albans was sentenced to nine months in prison after using online deception to target teenage boys. Matthew Vickers, 26, from Frogmore Home Park, fabricated the identity of a 22-year-old woman named Sarah Brinkley and contacted 12 boys under 16.St Albans Crown Court heard that Vickers persuaded two boys to send explicit images of themselves. One 14-year-old was told, “I can get nude and rude if you can get rude with me?”
When Vickers’ true identity was uncovered, one boy expressed feeling like “an idiot,” adding, “I realise it was really stupid. I feel horrified about myself for doing it,” in a statement.
Vickers appeared in court on the Thursday to face charges including causing a boy to engage in non-penetrative activity, attempting to involve a boy in sexual activity, and breaching a sexual harm prevention order on three occasions.
Prosecutor Ann Evans revealed that in 2013, Vickers had previously been convicted of causing a male under 16 to engage in sexual activity and possessing indecent images of children. He was issued a sexual harm prevention order, which prohibited him from contacting boys online and permitted police to monitor his internet activity.
Mrs. Evans further stated that police found Vickers had been using a smartphone not registered with authorities and had deleted browsing history from his laptop. The third breach involved direct contact with minor boys.
Judge Andrew Bright QC described Vickers as “manipulative” and noted that a sex offender treatment program he attended had not been effective. The judge stated, “I am not persuaded you deserve another chance. You are 26-years-old, you are not a child anymore. The court is at the end of its proverbial tether with you. The only sentence is immediate custody. The public demand that people who behave in the way you did should go to prison.
He added, “This will be your first taste of custody. You need to know if you continue to offend like this you will go to prison for longer and longer times.” Vickers was ordered to surrender his phone and computer, register as a sex offender, and adhere to the sexual harm prevention order indefinitely.
