JACK WILLIAMS FROM MOTHERWELL SENTENCED TO 7 YEARS FOR CHILD ABUSE IN GLASGOW
In a case that has shocked the community of Motherwell and the wider Glasgow area, Jack Williams, aged 65, was sentenced to seven years in prison for heinous acts of child abuse. The conviction stems from a series of disturbing allegations involving multiple young victims, some of whom were molested during camping trips and other outings, dating back to the mid-1970s.Williams, who was known locally as a Scout leader and an active member of the Congregational Church in Motherwell, had previously maintained a facade of a respectable and caring individual. He was involved in organizing boys' football teams and appeared to be a dedicated father figure to many children in the community. However, beneath this veneer, he engaged in a pattern of sexual abuse that has now been exposed in court.
The case gained further prominence when Eric Cullen, a former actor from the television series Rab C Nesbitt, publicly revealed that Williams had molested him along with two other boys. Cullen, who passed away at the age of 31, courageously provided evidence that contributed to Williams's conviction. Cullen had previously served time for possessing child pornography, a sentence he attributed to the trauma inflicted by Williams and others during his childhood.
At the High Court in Glasgow, Lord Johnston delivered a stern judgment, condemning Williams for the monstrous crimes committed against vulnerable children. The judge emphasized that Williams showed no remorse for his actions and had committed these offenses many years prior, with some incidents occurring as early as 1974. One victim recounted being molested during a camping trip, and it was revealed that the abuse had lasting effects, including the breakdown of one victim’s marriage.
Williams’s defense lawyer, Norman Ritchie, described his client as a man with a dual personality. Ritchie explained that Williams had a respectable public image, with a good work record, military service, and active involvement in religious activities. However, he also revealed that Williams had come to terms with his homosexuality only two decades ago, at a time when such an orientation was widely stigmatized and not accepted.
The court also ordered Williams to be placed on the national register of sex offenders, acknowledging the ongoing risk he might pose to children. Social workers expressed concern about his potential danger, despite Ritchie’s assertions that his age, declining health, and long-term relationship with a male partner for six years minimized this risk.
Eric Cullen’s tragic story is further compounded by his own troubled history. In 1995, Cullen was jailed for nine months after police discovered a large collection of child pornography at his home. His sentence was later reduced to probation after an appeal. Cullen died of a heart attack less than a year after his release, leaving behind a legacy of bravery in speaking out against abuse. He had also revealed that Williams had introduced him to a paedophile friend, scout master Frank Currens, who was later sentenced to 14 years for abusing boys.
As the community grapples with the revelations, the case serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers that can lurk behind seemingly normal facades, and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable children from predators like Jack Williams.
