ISMAIL ADEWUMI BIRMINGHAM SCHOOL WORKER SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING 13-YEAR-OLD BOY
The individual known as Ismail Adewumi has become the focus of a disturbing criminal case that has shocked the Birmingham community.Adewumi, a 26-year-old man from Holte Road, Sparkbrook, was convicted of engaging in sexual activities with a minor and communicating inappropriately with a child.
His actions involved grooming and sexual assault against a 13-year-old boy, who was not a student at Redstone Academy in Balsall Heath where Adewumi was employed in an administrative capacity.
Following the discovery of a distressing video in which Adewumi was seen on a toilet, the school took immediate action.
They suspended him from his duties and promptly contacted law enforcement authorities.
The video, which Adewumi had sent to the young boy, was deemed highly inappropriate and contributed to the school's swift response.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Adewumi was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison after admitting to two counts of sexual activity with a minor and one count of sexual communication with a child.
In his defense, Adewumi’s legal representatives argued that he was a victim of circumstances, citing the social pressures within his community regarding his sexual orientation.
His defense lawyer, Lynette McLement, explained that Adewumi was a man who struggled with his identity and had difficulty discussing his feelings openly.
She stated that in 2020, the pressure to marry him off became intense, and his family, including his mother, decided to find him a wife, which added to his distress.
McLement emphasized that Adewumi had never had a girlfriend and was not permitted to discuss his sexual preferences, which remained a taboo subject in his community.
She further explained that the first person who engaged with Adewumi about sexual matters was a young man who joked about sex, which was a light-hearted interaction.
The defense argued that Adewumi’s attraction was to males in general, not specifically because of the boy’s age, and that societal taboos surrounding sexuality contributed to his situation.
McLement described Adewumi as a victim of societal and cultural circumstances, rather than a predatory individual.
The communication between Adewumi and the boy escalated from innocent banter about video games to more troubling exchanges, including references to phone sex.
At one point, Adewumi made a threatening remark, saying he would 'strip you in the street and tie you to a lamppost.' Throughout their interactions, Adewumi used terms of endearment such as 'darling' and 'babes,' and he also sent inappropriate videos of himself to the boy.
The grooming behavior culminated during a night when Adewumi repeatedly groped the boy over a two-hour period.
The victim later reported the incident to someone else, who then informed the school authorities.
Headteacher Sadaat Rasool of Redstone Academy confirmed that the school acted swiftly upon noticing suspicious behavior.
He stated, “Suspicious behaviour was brought to our attention so we immediately followed safeguarding guidelines, suspended the employee and made appropriate contact with relevant agencies including the police and the DBS.
Safeguarding in the school is of utmost importance and we ensure all staff are trained and up-to-date with how to identify and raise concerns.” During sentencing, Judge Roderick Henderson emphasized the gravity of the offense, despite acknowledging the difficulties faced by Adewumi within his community.
The judge remarked, “I don't at all underestimate the difficulty you found in your community but the core of this case and what makes it so serious is he was so much younger than you.
You were a full adult.
You knew this nine-years-younger-than-you boy was in a completely different category and you did, no doubt in the confused state you were in, exploit him and caused real damage.”
