LEEDS MAN ON TRIAL FOR BRUTAL KNIFE ATTACK ON PARTNER

A Leeds man stabbed his sleeping partner with such force that the knife broke, a court has heard. Ingus Galaskis, aged 37, is currently on trial at Leeds Crown Court charged with attempted murder after the attack in Baileys Crescent, Seacroft, on September 3 of the previous year. The jury heard that Galaskis admits to stabbing the woman and causing grievous bodily harm but denies intent to kill her. The prosecutor, Angus McDonald, explained that the woman had been on holiday in Latvia and had asked Galaskis to leave their residence. When she returned, she found the house in disarray with spilled alcohol and was told by her partner that he had been drinking, which may have contributed to his aggressive behavior. The defendant had been shouting at her, expressing anger over her return and the state of the house. Despite her attempt to call her mother, Galaskis returned upstairs but left again, only to return later with a rucksack. He then began the assault, stabbing her "again and again" until the knife broke, with some of the blade remaining lodged in her body. During the attack, Galaskis allegedly said, "You will get it, you will see and you deserve it." The court was told that after realizing the knife had broken, Galaskis went to the kitchen to retrieve another weapon. Days after the incident, the woman discovered a second knife hidden in her bedroom. The prosecution stated that as Galaskis was in the kitchen, the woman managed to escape and seek help from neighbors, who tended to her injuries and called emergency services. A brave neighbor later returned to the house and found Galaskis sitting in a chair, smoking, and reportedly said, "I'm going to jail," in a manner suggesting indifference. Police arrived at the scene, arrested Galaskis, and recovered the broken knife from upstairs. The woman was hospitalized for treatment. The trial, which was expected to last two to three days, continued. The judge and jury are assessing the severity of the attack, which involved multiple stab wounds to her ribs, and Galaskis's intention. The case highlights the violent confrontation and the aftermath, including the discovery of a second knife later at the scene.
