IFTIKHAR AND FARZENA AHMED SENTENCED FOR MURDER OF SHAFILEA IN GREAT SANKEY AND CUMBRIA

In a landmark case that has shocked the community of Great Sankey and the wider Warrington area, the parents of Shafilea Ahmed, Iftikhar Ahmed and Farzena Ahmed, have been convicted of her murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. The tragic events unfolded over a decade ago, with the court proceedings revealing harrowing details of the young girl’s death and the circumstances leading up to it.

Shafilea Ahmed, a 17-year-old girl from Great Sankey, disappeared in 2003 from her family home in Warrington. Her body was discovered six months later in the River Kent near Sedgwick, Cumbria, an area close to Kendal in the Lake District, approximately 70 miles from her hometown. The discovery of her remains marked the culmination of a lengthy investigation that spanned several years and involved numerous revelations about her life and the pressures she faced from her family.

The court heard that both Iftikhar Ahmed, aged 52, and his wife Farzena, aged 49, had denied any involvement in their daughter’s death. However, the jury at Chester Crown Court reached a unanimous verdict on Friday, finding them guilty of her murder. The judge, Mr Justice Roderick Evans, sentenced both parents to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 25 years before they are eligible for parole.

One of the most disturbing testimonies came from Shafilea’s sister, Alesha, who provided crucial evidence against her parents. She recounted witnessing her parents suffocate Shafilea with a plastic bag in front of their other children. Alesha also testified that after the parents pushed Shafilea onto a settee, her mother allegedly said, “just finish it here,” implying an intent to end her life. These revelations shed light on the brutal nature of the crime and the family dynamics involved.

The court also discussed the cultural and familial pressures that Shafilea faced. It was revealed that her parents had tried to impose traditional values on her, which she refused to accept. She was known for socializing outside her community, dyeing her hair, and wearing stilettos—behaviors that clashed with her parents’ expectations. In February 2003, her parents took her to Pakistan in an attempt to force her into an arranged marriage. During this trip, Shafilea collapsed after drinking bleach, an incident that was later described as a suicide attempt. Her father claimed she drank the bleach during a power outage, mistaking it for fruit juice.

Despite her injuries, the family returned to the UK, but shortly thereafter, Shafilea went missing. Police investigations initially yielded few clues, but authorities monitored the family home through bugging devices. They intercepted conversations where Mr. and Mrs. Ahmed expressed concern about DNA evidence, cursed police officers, and coached their other children on what to say. It was not until six years later, when Alesha helped plan a robbery at the family home, that a significant breakthrough occurred. During a police interview, Alesha admitted that she had witnessed her parents murder her sister seven years earlier.

Further details emerged about Shafilea’s troubled life. Born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, she aspired to become a solicitor. Her struggles with her family’s strict traditional expectations culminated in her rejecting an arranged marriage proposal during her trip to Pakistan. She had also swallowed bleach during that visit, which severely damaged her throat and required ongoing medical treatment. Her father claimed she drank the bleach during a power cut, mistaking it for fruit juice. Media reports indicated that her refusal to accept her parents’ plans and her defiance of cultural norms contributed to her tragic fate.

In 2004, her father’s body was discovered in the River Kent near Sedgwick, Cumbria. The body was found after heavy flooding in the area, and police believed it had been deliberately concealed. Items such as a gold “zigzag” bracelet and a blue topaz ring, identified as belonging to Shafilea, were found with the body. Due to advanced decomposition, the cause of death could not be conclusively determined, but the police suspected she had been murdered shortly after her disappearance. The condition of her remains, including the discovery of a femur, indicated dismemberment, further emphasizing the brutality of her death.

Detective Sergeant Mike Foster commented on the case, stating, “The pathologist could not determine the cause of death, but did say the body was that of a young female. Because of the condition of the body, no further findings could be made.” The case remains a stark reminder of the tragic consequences of cultural conflict and family violence.
