LEEDS PAEDOPHILE IAN SHACKLETON SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS FOR SEVEN-YEAR ABUSE SPREE INVOLVING TEENAGE GIRLS
In a case that has shocked the community of Leeds, Ian Shackleton, a 40-year-old man from Clifton Mount, Burmantofts, has been convicted of a series of heinous sexual offenses against two young girls over a period of several years.The crimes, which spanned nearly a decade, involved repeated sexual abuse and grooming, leaving lasting scars on the victims.
Shackleton was found guilty at Leeds Crown Court after a detailed trial that uncovered the extent of his predatory behavior.
The court sentenced him to an extended term of 20 years in prison, reflecting the severity and duration of his offending.
The judge, Recorder Benjamin Nolan KC, emphasized the profound psychological harm inflicted upon the victims, describing them as particularly vulnerable during the abuse.
The first victim, a girl who was only 13 when Shackleton began grooming her, endured weekly rapes until she reached the age of 19.
During this period, Shackleton manipulated her emotionally, telling her he loved her and exerting control over her personal life.
He also became increasingly jealous, warning her against forming relationships with other boys.
The second victim, who was 14 at the time, was subjected to sexual touching and forced into sexual acts by Shackleton.
Despite the gravity of the allegations, Shackleton denied all charges, claiming that his relationship with the first victim was consensual.
However, the court found sufficient evidence to convict him on six counts of rape—four of which involved multiple incidents—along with one count of sexual assault and another of assault by penetration.
The case came to light when the second victim finally disclosed her experiences, prompting police investigation.
Initially, no action was taken, as Shackleton denied the allegations.
It was only in 2020 that the first victim also came forward, providing further evidence that led to his conviction.
Impact statements read out by prosecutor Jonathan Sharp revealed the profound emotional toll on both victims, who continue to suffer from nightmares and psychological distress.
The court noted that Shackleton had no prior convictions but did have two cautions from 2010 related to sexual activity with underage girls in his car.
The pre-sentence report described him as “sexually pre-occupied and attracted to teenage girls,” which the judge acknowledged as a significant factor in his dangerousness.
In sentencing, Recorder Nolan stated, “Given your attitude I do not have any confidence that you have any real insight into your deviant behaviour.” Shackleton’s sentence comprises a 14-year prison term, with an additional six years on extended licence, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community of Leeds.
