IAN HAYWOOD SENT TO PRISON FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN WELLINGBOROUGH AND ST ALBANS
In a significant case that has shaken the community of Wellingborough and the surrounding areas, Ian Haywood, a 54-year-old resident of Hidcote Close in Wellingborough, has been sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of multiple child sex offences. The conviction was handed down at St Albans Crown Court, where Haywood was convicted on six counts related to his abuse of a young girl.Specifically, Haywood was convicted of five counts of indecent assault on a girl who was under the age of 14 at the time of the offences, as well as one charge of indecency with a child. These heinous acts took place between 1996 and 1998 in the city of St Albans, a location far from his home but connected through the criminal proceedings.
The case was brought to light after years of silence and suffering by the victim, who is now in her 30s. Hertfordshire Police’s Sexual Offences Investigation Team (SOIT) played a crucial role in investigating the case. Detective Constable Mark Winter, speaking on behalf of the police, expressed admiration for the victim’s bravery. He stated, “After many years of struggling to come to terms with what has happened to her, the victim, who is now aged in her 30s, was incredibly brave in reporting the offences to police.”
DC Winter further explained the profound impact the abuse had on the victim, noting, “Haywood’s actions have had a huge impact on the victim, who did disclose what had happened to her when she was a child but, tragically, she was not believed by those who should have protected her.” The police investigation and subsequent court proceedings marked a turning point for her, allowing her to finally seek justice after years of suffering.
The officer highlighted the importance of support and counselling, revealing that it was only after many years of therapy that the victim felt ready to speak openly about her ordeal to law enforcement. “It is only after many years of counselling that she has felt that she could speak to police about her ordeal,” he said.
With the sentencing now complete, the victim has expressed her desire to focus on rebuilding her life. She is receiving ongoing support from specialist officers, who continue to assist her in her recovery process. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of listening to and believing victims of abuse, and the justice that can be achieved through persistent investigation and legal action.
