Ian Hargreaves, a 66-year-old man from Leeds, used the BBC complaints system to send malicious messages threatening the lives of presenter Clive Myrie and Formula 1 commentator Jack Nicholls.

During court examination, he was also noted to have made disturbing references to the murder of Jill Dando, a BBC journalist.

Police investigations led to his identification as the sender of over 1,000 child sexual abuse images stored on devices seized from his home.

He was also found to be carrying a lock-knife when arrested.

The defendant entered guilty pleas to charges of malicious communications, possession of an offensive weapon, and possession of indecent images, resulting in an 18-month prison sentence.

He had a previous conviction in 2007 related to firearms after police found weapons at his residence during an incident involving a racially offensive menu sent through a restaurant letterbox.

Prosecutor Anthony Dunn explained that Hargreaves submitted anonymous complaints to the BBC via an online form, which included offensive language, racist remarks, and tirades against Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, claiming he shouldn't be called an Englishman.

He also accused the broadcaster of having a left-wing bias.

The court revealed that Hargreaves threatened violence against BBC personnel, specifically mentioning plans to shoot a presenter, and made disturbing references to the murder of Jill Dando.

Both Myrie and Nicholls received security precautions after the threats surfaced.

Myrie shared that he found the threats deeply troubling and felt vulnerable while traveling.

Similar threatening messages were sent to the London Evening Standard, with investigations linking all the messages to Hargreaves.

Police in West Yorkshire and Northern Ireland tracked him down, and he was arrested outside his home in late 2017, with a large lock-knife found on him.

A search of his property uncovered a staggering 1,341 images of child sexual abuse.

His legal representative, Ben Thomas, stated that Hargreaves did not intend to harm anyone or send the messages directly.

It was also reported that Hargreaves has previously undergone mental health treatment.

Hargreaves was ordered to appear on the sex offender register for a period of seven years.

Judge Rodney Jameson, QC, commented that the content and intent of the messages were grossly offensive, racist, and aimed at creating significant anxiety.
