BRADFORD MAN IAN BURBANK SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR ABUSING THREE YOUNG GIRLS IN BRADFORD

In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Bradford, a 67-year-old man named Ian Burbank has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 12 years after being found guilty of multiple heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse and rape of three young girls.

The incident came to light when one of Burbank’s victims, overwhelmed with trauma, confided in her teacher following a talk delivered by the Childline charity at her school.

The child was visibly distressed, described as 'shaking from head to foot,' as she revealed the abuse she had endured at the hands of Burbank, according to the court proceedings.

This disclosure prompted immediate police action, leading to Burbank’s arrest in July.

During the court hearing at Bradford Crown Court, it was disclosed that Burbank, residing on Moorside Gardens in the Eccleshill area of Bradford, had pleaded guilty to nine separate charges.

These charges spanned a period of four years and involved the sexual assault and repeated oral rape of the three young girls, who ranged in age from four to ten at the time of the abuse.

Prosecutor John Harrison detailed that Burbank had begun abusing his first victim when she was only four years old, a fact that underscores the severity and duration of his crimes.

Further allegations revealed that Burbank had threatened the victims, warning them that if they disclosed his actions, he would be in trouble with the police and face imprisonment.

One of the girls recounted feeling sick and disgusted after Burbank made her touch him indecently.

The trauma was so profound that she was unable to speak about her experience directly; instead, she was compelled to write down the details of her abuse, illustrating the deep psychological scars inflicted upon her.

Following his arrest, Burbank did not deny the allegations.

Instead, he confessed to the police that he had told his victims to keep his actions a secret.

He described his behavior as somewhat akin to an addiction, expressing difficulty in stopping his abusive conduct.

His lawyer, Camille Morland, acknowledged that Burbank had committed terrible offenses against vulnerable children but highlighted that he had been unusually candid with law enforcement, taking full responsibility for his actions.

Morland also pointed out that Burbank had no prior criminal record and had been regarded as a hardworking and respected member of the Bradford community before his arrest.

She emphasized that he was overwhelmed with guilt, to the extent that he felt suicidal after each incident.

The court was told that Burbank was fully aware of the devastating impact his actions had on the victims, both now and in the future.

Judge Roger Thomas QC, the Recorder of Bradford, condemned Burbank’s conduct, describing the abuse as occurring in the 'most terrible way.' He acknowledged the bravery of one of the victims who had the courage to report her abuse after a visit from Childline, highlighting the importance of such support services.

To prevent any future harm, the judge ordered Burbank to sign the sex offenders’ register for life and issued a Sexual Offences Prevention Order aimed at safeguarding the victims and other children from potential contact with him in the future.

After the sentencing, Detective Constable Emma Dawson from the Bradford District Safeguarding Unit expressed her gratitude to the victims and their families for coming forward.

She emphasized that Burbank exploited the innocence and vulnerability of his young victims to carry out repeated sexual assaults.

Dawson also stated her hope that the sentence would bring some measure of relief to the victims and encourage others who have suffered similar abuse to report their experiences.

She reaffirmed the police’s commitment to investigating all reports of sexual abuse thoroughly and with sensitivity, regardless of how much time has passed since the incidents occurred.
