IAIN STAVERT FROM KENDAL CAUGHT IN SHOCKING ONLINE STING INVOLVING CHILD PREDATORS
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online predators, Iain Jeremy Stavert, a 52-year-old resident of Kendal, was caught in a police sting operation that uncovered his inappropriate and illegal conduct towards what he believed to be a young girl. The incident took place in February 2016, when law enforcement officers set up an online operation aimed at catching individuals attempting to engage in sexual activities with minors.Stavert, who lives on Empsom Road in Kendal, was actively involved in the illicit exchanges despite being warned that the person he was communicating with was only a few weeks away from turning 14. The police had created a detailed dossier that documented his conduct, which included making lewd comments and engaging in inappropriate behaviour during a webcam conversation. The evidence was damning, and when confronted with it, Stavert responded with a flippant remark, saying, “My life is over. What have I done? Silly boy.”
He was charged with one count of attempting to engage in sexual activity in the presence of a child, along with an incitement charge. These offences were committed on December 10th of the previous year, 2015. The case was brought before Carlisle Crown Court, where Judge Barbara Forrester sentenced Stavert to 16 months in prison. However, the sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed another offence within that period.
As part of his sentence, Stavert is required to undergo a rehabilitation program and adhere to a four-month night-time curfew. Furthermore, he must comply with a strict sexual harm prevention order and is subject to the sex offender notification requirements for the next decade. This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online grooming and protect minors from exploitation, especially in communities like Kendal where such incidents can have a profound impact.
