March 2013 – Now living in the Morpeth, Northumberland area June 2011 Daughter slams paedophile dad THE daughter of a pervert convicted of abusing young girls in East Lothian hopes her “evil” father kills himself in prison. Henry Mitchell Renton, 67, was found guilty of using lewd, libidinous practices and behaviour towards two girls, aged 10 and 12, between 2008 and 2010 at addresses in East Lothian after a trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. Renton was sentenced on Monday to two years’ imprisonment and placed on the sex offenders’register. Sheriff Michael O’Grady also ordered he be supervised for two years following his release from prison. The retired farmer had moved to Berwick after he was seriously injured at his home in Macmerry last March by an outraged friend of his victims’ families, Scott MacKinnon, who was jailed for five years and four months after admitting slashing Renton’s throat. His daughter, Trina, was in court as her father was jailed and told the Courier he should have received a longer prison term. “I personally don’t think he’s been punished enough,” she said. “I really hope that he does away with himself in jail. That for me would be the best result.” Trina, 42, said she had warned Renton’s acquaintances that her father was a danger to children when he moved to East Lothian, from Coldstream a few years ago. “When I was growing up he would grab my breasts all the time and make comments,” she said. “I tried to warn people I knew in East Lothian what he was capable of but they didn’t believe me. “I was devastated when I found out what he’d done. I felt sick.” She described her father, who she has not spoken to for six years, as an “evil, violent” man. “My mother, Eileen, died when I was 16. He was violent and would beat her up,” Trina said. She slammed the fact that the sentence Scott MacKinnon – a former care worker with ELCAP – was serving was more than double the term her father was handed. “The sentence Scott received was absolutely shocking,” said mum-of-five Trina. “What he did harmed one person who deserved everything that was coming to him, but what my dad did has scarred children for life and destroyed families.” The mother of one of Renton’s victims has also spoken of her disgust. The paedophile was a close friend for more than 30 years before his offences came to light. “I’d known him since I was a bairn, he was a friend of my parents,” said the woman, who lives in Tranent but can’t be named. “He was a charming man and everybody got on with him. “I want to make sure people know exactly what he is because I think there’s every chance he could come out of prison and just do exactly the same thing again. “There are no words to describe what our family has gone through. I’m so glad he received a custodial sentence. “I spoke to Scott on Monday and he was delighted Renton was sent to prison, though he is disappointed it wasn’t for longer. It’s like the justice system is saying it is a worse crime to assault a paedophile than it is to abuse children. How does that make sense?”
