HARRY OLDFIELD/JOHN MATHERS: MIDDLESBROUGH CHILD ABUSER SENTENCED FOR REPEATED SEX OFFENSES AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Middlesbrough, a man with a long history of sexual offenses against children has been sentenced to prison once again.Harry Oldfield, who later adopted the alias John Scott Mathers, was convicted of multiple heinous crimes involving minors, including indecent assaults and possession of illegal images depicting children.
Oldfield’s criminal history dates back to his teenage years.
At just 17 years old, he was detained for the first time after being found guilty of indecently assaulting two children under the age of 10.
Following this initial conviction, he changed his name to John Scott Mathers, a move believed to be an attempt to evade detection and accountability for his past crimes.
Despite the change of identity, his criminal tendencies persisted.
Decades after his initial offenses, Mathers committed further sexual assaults, this time targeting a very young boy during the 1980s.
These later crimes only came to light many years later, when the victim, now a married man and father, confided in his wife about the abuse he endured as a child.
The revelation prompted a police investigation that uncovered a disturbing pattern of behavior spanning several decades.
During a raid on Mathers’ residence on Fulbeck Road in Middlesbrough, authorities discovered nearly 600 child abuse images stored on his computer.
Among these were almost 100 photographs classified at the most severe levels of illegal content under law.
Additionally, officers found six illegal “cartoons” depicting children, which are considered prohibited images.
Mathers had attempted to conceal his activities by using specialized software designed to hide or delete digital evidence, but his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.
The court heard from the victim of the sexual assaults, who chose to remain anonymous for legal reasons.
In a heartfelt statement read aloud in court, he described the profound and lasting impact the abuse had on his life.
He expressed feelings of confusion, shame, and despair, questioning “Why me?” and struggling to understand and cope with the trauma.
The victim stated, “He’s ruined my life,” emphasizing how the abuse shattered his trust in others and led to feelings of loneliness and emotional suppression.
These issues severely affected his mental health, making it difficult for him to fulfill his roles as a husband and father.
Despite the pain, the victim also shared a sense of relief that speaking out marked the beginning of his healing process.
He concluded by saying, “I’ll never forgive him for what he’s done.
I’m getting better but I’ll never forget,” highlighting the enduring scars left by Mathers’ actions.
In court, Mathers, now 47 years old, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of indecent assault, two counts of indecency with a child, 17 counts of making indecent photographs of children, and one count of possessing prohibited images, specifically the six illegal cartoons.
His defense attorney, Brian Russell, acknowledged his client’s remorse and requested that the court consider his guilty pleas as a sign of his willingness to accept responsibility.
Judge Peter Armstrong sentenced Mathers to a total of three years in prison—30 months for the indecent assaults and six months for the possession of illegal images.
The judge also imposed a sexual offences prevention order, which prohibits him from having unsupervised contact with anyone under 16, restricts his use of the internet and digital devices, and bans him from working with children.
Furthermore, Mathers will be registered as a sex offender indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Ged Swash of Cleveland Police commended the bravery of the victim and the support provided by his family.
He emphasized that the sentence aims to serve as a deterrent to others who might consider committing similar offenses against children.
Detective Swash also highlighted Mathers’ disturbing interest in child abuse images, noting that he attempted to hide his illegal activities using anti-forensic software, which underscores the calculated nature of his crimes.
