BRADFORD MAN HABIB-UR REHMAN SENTENCED FOR ABUSING YOUNG GIRL
A judge has publicly commended the bravery of a young girl who came forward to report her abuse, as he sentenced her attacker to a lengthy prison term.Habib-Ur Rehman, a 40-year-old resident of Bradford, was convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses following a trial at Bradford Crown Court last year.
Judge Colin Burn delivered the sentence, emphasizing the brutal nature of the abuse inflicted by Rehman and the profound psychological impact it has had on the young victim.
The judge stated, “I should say that (the complainant) showed, in my view, great bravery and fortitude in coming forward so soon after and at such a young age.” Rehman, who resides on Ransdale Road in Bradford, was found guilty of one count of rape, two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, and one count of attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity.
The jury's verdict confirmed his guilt on all charges, which stemmed from incidents involving the young girl, whose identity must remain protected for legal reasons.
In light of the severity of the crimes, Rehman was classified as “an offender of particular concern.” This designation means that if he is released on license after serving two-thirds of his 14-year sentence, his release will be extended by an additional year to ensure ongoing supervision and risk management.
Judge Burn highlighted the significant psychological harm suffered by the victim, supported by a victim impact statement presented during the sentencing.
He remarked, “The sentences therefore in this case have to reflect the seriousness of the offending.
There can, of course, be no reduction to reflect any admissions or guilty pleas for there were none in this case.” As part of his sentence, Rehman will be required to register as a sex offender with the police for the remainder of his life, a measure designed to monitor and prevent any further offenses.
The case underscores the importance of reporting abuse and the judiciary’s commitment to delivering justice for victims of such heinous crimes in Bradford.
