GRAHAM LANE FROM GATESHEAD SENTENCED TO 19 YEARS FOR CHILD RAPE AND SEXUAL ABUSE
In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Gateshead, Graham Lane, aged 58, of Blyth Street, Chopwell, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 19 years at Newcastle Crown Court for a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of a young girl. The abuse was carried out when the victim was less than ten years old, with Lane engaging in a disturbing campaign of rape and sexual assault.
The young girl, who was initially too frightened to speak out, endured this torment in silence for a period of time.
Her ordeal only came to light when she confided in her school friend about what had been happening to her.
The friend, in turn, informed her mother, which ultimately led to the investigation and subsequent arrest of Lane.
During the court proceedings, the victim's mother delivered a powerful victim impact statement, expressing her devastation and heartbreak.
She stated, “I’m devastated at the disclosure of rape and sexual abuse of my daughter.
(She) has had nightmares and night terrors in the past and I believe this is linked to the abuse.
We have been referred to counselling to deal with the abuse.” Graham Lane pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including several counts of rape and sexual assault against the young girl.
The investigation uncovered further disturbing evidence, revealing that Lane possessed indecent images of children, including photographs of the girl and other minors, which he had obtained from the internet.
Additionally, he admitted to sex offences involving another young girl, indicating a pattern of predatory behavior.
In addition to the prison sentence, Lane was ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely and was subjected to a lifelong sexual harm prevention order.
The judge, Tim Gittins, described Lane’s actions as grooming the victim with gifts before “preying” on her and repeatedly raping her.
The judge condemned Lane’s conduct as “abhorrent behavior.” Judge Gittins emphasized the profound impact of Lane’s actions on the young girl, stating, “At such an age, her pain and confusion must have been almost unbearable, yet you persisted for that persistent period and until she raised the alarm.
As a result of the sensitive, cautious investigation that followed, the true gravity of what you had done to her became clear.” The court’s verdict reflects the severity of Lane’s crimes and the community’s outrage over such a betrayal of trust and innocence.
