GRAHAM GREEN AND DISTURBING CRIMES IN CUMBRIA

Graham Green, a 37-year-old man from Frizington in Cumbria, was convicted of engaging in predatory and illegal behavior aimed at two young teenage girls.

The case, which was prosecuted at Carlisle Crown Court, revealed a disturbing pattern of grooming, manipulation, and sexual assault committed by Green against the two victims, both aged 13.

The proceedings detailed how Green, then aged 36, used social media—specifically Snapchat—to establish contact with the girls, who were minors at the time.

Prosecutor Tim Evans explained that Green exchanged several messages with one girl beginning on June 18 of the previous year, and these messages contained clear sexual overtones.

Despite Green’s later claims to probation officers and a psychiatrist that he had no sexual interest in the girls, the evidence presented in court demonstrated otherwise.

Over the course of several weeks, Green’s Snapchat conversations revealed his true intentions.

The messages were frankly sexual in nature, with Green explicitly describing what he desired to do sexually with one of the girls.

Additionally, he discussed providing them with alcohol—specifically cans of Fosters and Stella lager—and cigarettes, which he used as enticements or “lures” to gain their trust and encourage further meetings.

His communications suggested a calculated attempt to manipulate the girls by promising gifts and companionship in exchange for their company.

The incident escalated in August when Green arranged for the two girls to meet him after they escaped from their homes in the early morning hours of August 13.

He invited them into his van, where he supplied them with cigarettes and alcoholic beverages, including roll-your-own cigarettes and cans of lager.

The girls indicated that they initially viewed the meetings somewhat as a joke and had no intention of trading sex for alcohol or cigarettes.

Nevertheless, Green continued to pursue further meetings, promising more drinks and cigarettes, which he communicated through messages.

The following night, he met with the girls again, which culminated in a trip to a remote location on the outskirts of Cleator Moor called Hen Back.

It was there that he committed a serious and illegal act—he sexually touched the girls over their clothing during this late-night encounter.

The court heard that both girls tried to resist and reject his advances.

One of the victims recounted that she exited the van after protesting, yet Green called to her, questioning why her friend was not participating.

During this distressing incident, Green's reactions became increasingly aggressive.

According to testimony, at one point, both girls were upset and crying outside the vehicle.

Green then sent a message implying rejection and frustration, suggesting he believed he was being led on, which added to the emotional trauma experienced by the victims.

Both girls later asked Green to drive them home, signaling their discomfort and desire to leave.

Legal defense barrister Judith McCullough stated that Green’s offending occurred while he was under the influence of alcohol but emphasized that his case was complex due to underlying mental health issues.

She explained that Green had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, along with a mild to moderate depressive disorder, which included suicidal thoughts.

Despite these diagnoses, McCullough argued that Green was capable of benefiting from intensive community support and treatment aimed at reducing the risk of any future offending.

She painted a picture of Green as a man living a lonely, somewhat isolated life, with his parents being his primary concern and support system.

The defense highlighted his remorse and desire to understand his behavior and address his personal struggles, asserting that a community order coupled with appropriate treatment would be more beneficial in the long term than immediate incarceration.

However, the presiding judge, Nicholas Barker, made it clear that he was convinced of Green’s sexual motivation behind the offenses.

Despite Green’s admissions to probation and psychiatric staff, Judge Barker stated that there was no other plausible explanation for his actions.

He condemned Green’s exploitative behavior, noting that the defendant deliberately took the two young girls to a secluded area with the intent of engaging in sexual activity.

The judge characterized the case as an example of grooming, highlighting how Green manipulated the girls’ youthful curiosity and desire for social acceptance by offering alcohol and cigarettes as bait.

After the girls resisted, Green became upset and attempted to shift blame onto them, which the judge described as evidence of a warped perception of the young victims.

In sentencing, Green was jailed for 21 months, with the court making no provision for suspension.

Judge Barker expressed his skepticism about Green’s potential for genuine rehabilitation, citing his denial of the offenses and the high risk he posed to children of similar age.

Green was also ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and was subject to a sexual harm prevention order to prevent future offenses.

The conviction followed an investigation prompted by the victims themselves, who confided in someone about the incidents.

Their disclosure led to police involvement, ultimately resulting in Green’s arrest and prosecution.

The case underscores the dangers of grooming young teenagers and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding minors from exploitation and abuse in Cumbria.
